T20 World Cup 2022: Flop XI of Super 12 from Week 1

ICC T20 World Cup 2022 has emerged as an interesting contest in the first week of Super 12 round. Of 45 games, 23 have been played till now, while 3 got washed out and magnificent performances from the likes of Virat Kohli, Marcus Stoinis, Devon Conway Tim Southee, and Arshdeep Singh have lit up the event. In the coming matches of the tournament Down Under, these players along with some other big names will have the responsibility to add spice to the tournament with their brilliance. On the other hand, there are some star players in the competition who haven’t performed according to their reputation. Before the event, these players were favourites to be on the list of top performers but after week 1, their display in the matches has been disappointing. In the next two weeks, these players’ performance might decide the fate of their respective teams, and also as influential figures, they will have to up their game to have an impact in the tournament. Let's have a look at- Underperforming 11 of the Super 12 stage from week 1 1. Jos Buttler (C) Before the T20 World Cup, England skipper Jos Buttler looked in good touch as the batter smashed two half-centuries against the Aussies in a three-match T20I series. In the T20 World Cup, the management and English fans were expecting him to play some explosive innings for the team but till now, Buttler’s bat has remained quiet. Playing the games of the marquee event against Afghanistan and Ireland, the wicketkeeper-batter scored only 18 runs with an abysmal average of 9. In the squad, his batting is very significant for the team, and in the upcoming matches, the wicketkeeper-batter needs to elevate his game by playing some big knocks against the top teams in the group. 2. David Warner When it comes to the T20 competitions, David Warner can never be written off and the same happened before the competition. The 36-year-old veteran was the favourites to feature on the list of impact players in the tournament, but in the two games of the competition, Warner crumbled under pressure. In the opening game against New Zealand, he went back to the pavilion early by scoring just 5. While in the must-win match against Sri Lanka, Warner again got dismissed cheaply at the score of 11. Till now, Warner has not been dominating against bowlers in the tournament. To qualify for the semi-finals, it’s imperative for Warner to lift up his form by playing some explosive innings for the team. 3. KL Rahul KL Rahul, before this colossal event, was expected to be a match-winner for the team, but his struggle to hold his nerves in crucial contests has become a major concern for the team. In the high-voltage game against Pakistan, Rahul failed to rack up runs for the team. Against The Netherlands, fans were again left disappointed as the right-handed opener threw his wicket at the score of 9. Rahul, one of the main batters for the team, had great outings with the bat in the home series against South Africa. The 30-year-old had smashed two half-centuries against Proteas before coming to Australia for the T20 World Cup. But Rahul so far in the tournament is going through a horrendous phase due to his performance in both group matches. For him, the next few games are very important as the team will expect him to chip in with the bat by delivering some massive figures to the team. 4. Mitchell Marsh Mitchell Marsh is a key member of the Australian side as he dons the role of a batting all-rounder. His role as an all-rounder becomes important for the team to win big games, but in this T20 World Cup, there has been a dip in his form. The 31-year-old Aussie, in the two games of the competition, was miserable with both bat and ball. His scores of 16 and 18 against New Zealand and Sri Lanka respectively caused damage to his image as a batter. On the other hand, his bowling against Sri Lanka is also a point of concern for the defending champions. In the next crucial contests in the competition, Australia will want him to strengthen the team by showing his best against opponents. In the last edition of the tournament, Marsh played a vital role in the team lifting the trophy for the first time. 5. Temba Bavuma South African skipper Temba Bavuma is going through a rough patch. Since the series against India, Bavuma is getting dominated by bowlers. In his last 5 T20I games, the South African captain has been unsuccessful to score in double digits. His struggle for runs in the last few matches clearly shows that the captaincy is taking a toll on his batting, but with the marquee tournament going on, the South African skipper has to come out stronger by fixing his batting woes. With three big clashes waiting for the team, South Africa has to prepare itself to deliver the best to qualify for the next stage, but Bavuma’s form with the bat will cause anxiety to Proteas. To emerge victorious in the top contests against giants, it will be crucial for Bavuma to play his role efficiently by providing fierce starts to the team. 6. Babar Azam Star Pakistan batter Babar Azam, who is also the skipper of his side, is struggling to find himself among runs in this edition of the World Cup. Against the arch-rivals India, the team was looking for great innings from him but the skipper departed early by getting dismissed on the first ball of his innings without scoring any runs. His poor form continued in the second game too as the batter again got hunted at the score of 4. In the must-win game against minnows Zimbabwe, Babar had a chance to get his form back by notching some runs for himself and the team but his failure with the bat again became a cause of Men in Green’s defeat against Zimbabwe. Pakistan, since the home series against England, have been facing the ire of former players for overreliance on their skipper and opener Mohammad Rizwan and for carrying a fragile middle-order batting line-up. In these circumstances, it will be crucial for Babar to play impactful innings for Pakistan in the next games. 7. Ben Stokes Ben Stokes, after holding the reins of the Test team, displayed an outstanding performance with his attacking approach, but his performance in the T20Is against Australia and the T20 World Cup has not been impressive. While appearing for England in the T20Is against Australia, the all-rounder was ineffective with the bat. The matter got worse when he failed against Afghanistan and Ireland by scoring only 2 and 6. As England is heading towards tough opponents, Ben Stokes’ silence with the bat is not a good sign for England as in the middle, he is crucial for the team to put up runs on the board with his brilliant batting skills. 8. Chris Woakes Tight bowling from Chris Woakes has helped England many times to emerge victorious but in this World Cup, so far, Woakes journey has been horrendous. During the loss at the hands of Ireland, Woakes’ spell played a major part. His miserable performance in England’s second game not just gave Ireland a chance to perform upset but also endangered England’s chances of qualifying for the semi-final stage. In the upcoming games against huge teams, the pacer has to deliver according to his potential. His ability to bowl perfect inswingers can make him one of the most dangerous bowlers in the Australian conditions but to make that happen, he has to take a lesson from his performances in his previous game. 9. Pat Cummins With the T20 World Cup happening Down Under, Pat Cummins has ideal conditions to be at his best. Playing at home, the bowler was expected to be lethal against batters, but in the two games of the competition, batters are not finding it difficult to face him. Against New Zealand, he came out as the most expensive bowler of the match by giving 46 runs in 4 overs. While playing against Sri Lanka, he was expected to do well but again the speedster failed to perform as Sri Lankan batters smashed him comfortably. As a prime bowler of the squad, the Australian team management wants him to provide a great start with the ball by providing breakthroughs and being economical but his economy in the first two matches is indicating his failure as a bowler. 10. Wanindu Hasaranga Wanindu Hasaranga is one of the most impactful players in the current Sri Lanka side. His experience and talent pushed the youngster towards success. In the T20 World Cup 2022, Sri Lanka expected him to take the team out of crunch situations but the spin ace is going through a horrible patch in the tournament. Playing against Australia in the second group game, Sri Lanka were riding high in the game by dismissing dangerous David Warner and Mitchell Marsh. For Hasaranga, it was a perfect situation to create pressure by delivering a perfect spell for the team using his brilliance but the 25-year-old spinner couldn’t do magic with his spin as the bowler got smashed by Australian batters Glenn Maxwell and Marcus Stoinis. Hasaranga’s spell in the match turned out to be an opportunity for Australia to gather runs. Both Maxwell and Stoinis brought him down by playing some great strokes. For Sri Lanka, Hasaranga’s consistency with the ball is essential to shine in the competition. 11. Shaheen Shah Afridi After becoming a star bowler for Pakistan with his attacking bowling in the last edition of the T20 World Cup, this year, Pakistani fans were hoping to see him dominate batters in the big games. The speedster returned to the squad after recovering from a knee ligament injury, but the premier pacer known for his lethal bowling didn’t perform according to his potential. Afridi, known for bulldozing batting line-ups with his blazing speed and perfect line and length, looked completely helpless against batters in the first two matches of the tournament. He also lost his pace after making a comeback as his speed in both games was around 133 to 138 km/h. Usually, the 22-year-old bowls above 140 km/h, but in this tournament, fans witnessed a radical drop in his pace. In the competition, Afridi failed has to get any wickets so far and his expensive bowling is still a headache for the Pakistan bowling line-up.
