T20 World Cup 2022: Flop XI of tournament

After delivering an incredible show for four weeks, the T20 World Cup 2022 has ended with England becoming champions for the second time by defeating Pakistan by five wickets in the final showdown at the MCG. Jos Buttler & his men, in the initial stage of the tournament, looked poor after claiming a not-so-convincing victory over Afghanistan and an unfortunate loss at the hands of Ireland by the Duckworth-Lewis method. But after those two contests, the Englishmen dominated their opponents with their legendary performances and came out victorious in the tournament by going home with the prestigious T20 World Cup trophy. In this huge event, Sam Curran became the Player of the Tournament with his remarkable bowling figures but before the tournament, some players were predicted favourites to win this award by notching up runs or plucking wickets for their teams. As expected, a few names such as Virat Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav came close with their performances while many other big names disappointed their teams and fans by leaving the tournament with their dismal figures. Here are Flop XI from T20 World Cup 2022 1. Rohit Sharma Rohit Sharma was going through a rough patch as both batter and skipper before the World Cup and after the tournament, things have gone worse for him due to India’s shameful defeat in the semi-final of the tournament at the hands of England. As a skipper, Sharma’s decisions were ineffective and he also drew flak from fans. Sharma's bizarre decisions as captain, such as excluding the leg spinner Yuzvendra Chahal from the playing 11 and giving chances to Axar Patel and Ravichandran Ashwin despite their consistent failures with the ball, didn't go well with fans and experts. The captain, after the team’s humiliating elimination from the tournament, also faced backlash for his defensive strategy in the crucial semi-final. While as a batter too, Sharma amassed only 116 runs in six matches with an extremely low average of 19.33. He also looked uneasy to play against the bowlers in the competition. His conservative approach while batting in the powerplay overs in back-to-back group matches was a danger sign and in the knockout game, it also proved costly for the team. Overall, his performance as a skipper and batter played a major role in the end of India’s World Cup journey with embarrassment. 2. David Warner David Warner is a renowned batter in this game and when it comes to T20Is, he becomes a specialist due to his vast skills and ferocious approach. As the tournament was getting played Down Under, his chances to become one of the top players in the tournament increased due to the home advantage. But in this mega event, Warner emerged as a disappointment for Australia due to his miserable performances. Playing four games in the tournament, he scored only 44 runs with an average of 11. His performance in the competition not only tarnished his image but also influenced Australia’s World Cup journey negatively. As an opener, he is adept at delivering incredible starts to the team with his opening partner and Aussie skipper Aaron Finch, but this time, he struggled to find himself among the runs. Before the tournament. Finch’s quiet bat in the India series was a concern for the Aussies but the return of Warner in the home series against England and his knock of 73 in the first T20 game provided relief to the management and supporters. But in every game of the World Cup, the veteran looked uncomfortable and failed to turn up against the bowlers. 3. Temba Bavuma South African skipper Temba Bavuma is going through a tough period in his career. His flop show in the India tour raised questions about his capability as a batter but in the World Cup, he had an opportunity to prove his critics wrong by shutting their mouths by hoarding big scores in the games. But for Bavuma, the tournament went as a nightmare because of the continuation of his poor run with the bat. As a captain, it was imperative for Bavuma to play some classy innings to boost the confidence of other players in the team to win the trophy. But in the tournament, his contribution was minimal as he accumulated only 70 runs with an average of 17.50. In the final group game, the situation got worse for the South African captain as his team crashed out of the competition by facing a shocking defeat at the hands of the Netherlands and it was very much due to the slow innings from him (20 runs off 20 deliveries) and De Kock (13 off 13 deliveries). Pursuing a target of 159, both the players failed to deliver a rapid start, which led to the collective failure of the batting line-up and also the vanquishing of The Proteas at the hands of the Dutch by 13 runs. 4. Mitchell Marsh Australia had a disappointing journey in this edition of the World Cup as they failed to defend the title by getting knocked out in the Super 12 round. In their journey, the Aussies trusted Mitchell Marsh in the number 3 position to accelerate the innings. Last year, Marsh’s incredible performance with the bat forced the Australian team management to shift Steven Smith's position. While in the 2021 World Cup final against New Zealand, he proved the management’s decision right by delivering rapid innings of unbeaten 77 off 50 deliveries to take the team home. Looking at his glorified past, the Australian team management again relied on him for this World Cup, but Marsh, unlike last year, was unsuccessful with the bat. Playing four matches in the competition, he scored only 106 runs with an average of 26.50. In the first game of this World Cup against New Zealand, Australia were struggling to go after the gigantic target of 201 runs with the early dismissals of both openers David Warner and Aaron Finch and the team was dependent on him to build a healthy partnership with Glenn Maxwell to pull off the chase but he, instead of maintaining composure, crumbled under pressure and played a negligent stroke and went back to the pavilion. While in the game against Sri Lanka, he left the team in a risky state by playing a slow innings of 17 runs off 17 balls while chasing the target of 158. 5. Shakib Al Hasan Bangladesh team management, this year, handed the captaincy mantle to Shakib Al Hasan by trusting in his potential as a leader. Shakib, who has more than 16 years of experience, was the best choice for this role due to his immense experience. But in the tournament, he was insignificant as a captain as Bangladesh failed to do anything special against big teams. Talking about Shakib’s performance as an all-rounder, he was miserable with both bat and ball. While batting, he could score only 44 runs in five games of the tournament with a terrible average of 8.80. On the other hand, with the ball too, he was able to scalp only six wickets at an expensive economy of 8.78. In the tournament, his underwhelming displays didn’t bring happiness to the faces of Bangladesh fans and team management. While as a leader too, Shakib looked defensive by giving a statement before the match against India saying that Bangladesh beating India in the World Cup would be an upset. 6. Jimmy Neesham Jimmy Neesham was one of the key names in the last edition of the World T20 to take New Zealand to the final. In this edition too, New Zealand were looking for some substantial performances from him in the middle order. But the left-handed batter failed to exude confidence with his batting by scoring only 53 runs in five matches with an average of 17.66. Neesham in the competition was key for the Black Caps as he boosts the team's ability to deal in sixes and fours with his aggressive batting. In this tournament, his failure to turn up against bowlers was not a good sign and in the crucial semi-final match against Pakistan, it went negative for the Kiwis when he scored an unbeaten 16 runs off 12 deliveries and couldn’t help the them to put a competitive score on the board. 7. Dinesh Karthik Dinesh Karthik wanted to play in the T20 World Cup 2022 for India and he also got selected for the World Cup team due to his ability to play match-finishing innings by playing huge shots in the last overs of the game. With his selection, skipper Rohit Sharma had to make a choice between Karthik and Rishabh Pant and the captain chose the veteran in a majority of World Cup matches for his experience and skills. For the 37-year-old Karthik, these games were a perfect opportunity to deliver charismatic performances for the team and end his career on a high note. But in the four matches of the tournament, he delivered a below-par performance by scoring only 14 runs in three innings, with a low average of 4.66. Before this glorious tournament, Karthik's notable innings for Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) attracted the team management's attention and helped him to get selected for the World Cup. In this World T20, he was expected to repeat his IPL performances for India, but his dismal numbers with the bat speak about his failure as a batter. 8. Axar Patel Axar Patel, in this World T20, was mostly selected due to Ravindra Jadeja's absence due to a knee injury. The team management believed in him playing the role of an all-rounder for the team but Axar failed to give his best with both bat and ball. Playing in the five games of the tournament, he didn't have a great time as a bowler due to his awful performances. In the five games of the competition, he was harmless towards batters by taking just three wickets. In the matches against Pakistan and England, the batters took a ruthless approach against him by smashing him all over the ground. The 28-year-old also featured in three innings as a batter in the World Cup games and it was expected of him to provide depth by contributing in the lower order. But he also failed to do that as he scored only nine runs. 9. Mitchell Starc Mitchell Starc, in this World Cup, was unsuccessful in delivering admirable performances for Australia. The bowler is known for being detrimental to batters with his sheer pace, but this time, he didn't perform according to his reputation with just three wickets in three matches with an economy rate of 8.50. In the competition, he was one of the biggest weapons for Australia due to his reputation of being one of the most feared pacers in the world, but in all the games of the tournament, batters destroyed his spells by plundering runs. Playing against Ireland, he bowled a double-wicket maiden in his opening over to help Australia to have complete control over the game, but in his last three overs, he conceded 43 runs and destroyed the hopes of Australia to gain a net run-rate boost to qualify for the semi-finals. 10. Pat Cummins In the first match of the World Cup 2022, Australia got crushed by New Zealand by 89 runs. After facing the loss at the hands of Kiwis, Aussie bowlers faced severe criticism due to their dismal bowling and one of the names was Pat Cummins. Being a premier bowler for Australia, Cummins had to bowl with an aggressive approach in this competition to help Australia defend the title successfully. Playing four matches in this colossal event, Cummins conceded runs at an average of 8.25 and bagged only three wickets. Playing against quality teams, he failed to perform up to the expectations. In a monster rout against the Black Caps, he was the most expensive bowler by giving 46 runs in four overs. His horrendous spell played a prime role in putting Australia in a vulnerable spot. While against Sri Lanka too, the pacer started well by dismissing Kusal Mendis early but again with his indisciplined bowling, he gave the most runs in the match with his bowling figures of 1/36. 11. Lockie Ferguson Pacer Lockie Ferguson's role in the team was to infuse energy in the New Zealand bowling line-up with his speed on bowling-friendly wickets of Australia. Along with veterans Trent Boult and Tim Southee, he could have made the Kiwi bowling unit the most dreadful one for opponents. But with his mediocre bowling in the tournament, he was unsuccessful in annoying batters. By bagging only seven wickets in five games at an economy of 8.36, the speedster failed to cheer up his team in the competition. Playing the big games against England and Pakistan, he leaked runs which became problematic for the team. The game against the Men in Green was important for the Kiwis to advance to the final of the tournament, but Ferguson by conceding 37 runs became the favourite for Pakistan batters to attack on.
