T20 World Cup 2022: Rating Batting of Super 12 teams in Week 1

The Week 1 of the much-awaited Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2022 got concluded on Friday (October 28). The tournament was marred by the incessant rain in a few of the matches, but some of them went down to the wire, which has kept the fans wanting more action. In terms of batting performances, most of the teams have done well to amass a good amount of runs. The Melbourne pitch offered assistance to the pacers, while Sydney was helpful for the spinners, but the batters prevailed on most occasions with their positive intent. Here are the rating of the batting performances of Super 12 teams in the first week. 12. Pakistan - 5.5 Ahead of the tournament, the Pakistan batters had enough confidence under their belt with the T20 series victory in the New Zealand T20 Tri-series. However, they have been rather ordinary with their batting performances, which has resulted in them losing both their league matches. The first game against India witnessed them losing the wickets of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan upfront. It was the knocks from Iftikhar Ahmed and Shan Masood which helped them to post 159 on the board. The bowlers did well, but the Indian team managed to chase down the score. In the second game, the bowlers were proficient to restrict Zimbabwe to 130. However, the openers again failed to provide a good start. The middle order succumbed to the pressure, and then the tail-enders could not hold their nerve. They lost by one run against the Chevrons, due to the dismal performance of the batters. 11. Bangladesh - 5.5 The Bangladesh team came into this tournament after losing all four league matches in the New Zealand T20 Tri-series. The batting unit has been rather inconsistent, which was depicted in Week 1 as well. In the first game against the Netherlands, they could score only 144 on the board, with youngster Afif Hossain as the top contributor. Nevertheless, the bowling unit was impressive to put pressure on the Dutch team and secure victory by nine runs. The second game against South Africa saw them concede 205. In reply, the top-order batters played irresponsible shots, while the middle-order could not pick up the momentum. As a result, they lost by 104 runs. 10. Netherlands - 6 The Netherlands team have been average with their performances in the tournament. The bowlers have done well, but the batting department has been a letdown for their chances, since the first round. In the first game against Bangladesh, the bowlers did the hard task to restrict the opposition to 144. However, the batters could not get the team off to a good start. Then, the middle order could not accelerate, as they lost the game by nine runs. They faced the Indian team in their latest outing, wherein they were given a target of 180. With a bad start, they could not recover and lost wickets in crunch moments. In the end, they lost the game by 56 runs. 9. Afghanistan - 6.5 The Afghanistan team came into the showpiece event after playing the Asia Cup 2022 and didn’t have enough match practice. Normally known as a bowling side, they are doing well on the batting front, but needs to gauge the situation correctly for playing certain shots. In the first game against England, the batting department could not do much good, as the team was bundled out for a total of 112. The team’s inability to play well against pacers was evident in their showing. Then, the bowlers did well but the opposition chased down the score easily in the end. The next two games have ended with a no result due to rain. They are at the last position with no wins in three league matches. The luck hasn’t favoured them, which has resulted in them being out of contention for the semi-finals. 8. Australia- 7 Much was expected from the host nation due to their fiery batting line-up, but their performances have been rather average. With a single victory in three games (one washout), they are on the brink of elimination with another loss. In the first game against New Zealand, Aussie bowlers conceded 200. Chasing a daunting score, they could not get into their groove and lost wickets regularly. The Aaron Finch-led side were dismissed for 111 and lost by 89 runs. The second game saw them facing Sri Lanka, wherein they were chasing 158. They came under the pump with wickets upfront, but Marcus Stoinis delivered a sensational knock to take the team home. Their third fixture against England ended as a no result due to rain. 7. England- 7 One of the finest sides in the tournament, England have done well in chunks in the tournament, but certainly need to come up with improved performances. They too have the same equation as the home team and need a win in their next outing to stay alive in the tournament. In their first game, the bowlers were terrific to bundle out Afghanistan for 112. However, the top-order batters could not weave their magic. It was Liam Livingstone’s composure, which helped the team to start off on a winning note. The Three Lions then locked horns against Ireland and were chasing a target of 158. The pair of Jos Buttler and Alex Hales were again dismissed early, while other batters could not deliver well in terms of strike rate. As a result, they lost just by five runs according to the DLS method, before the rain arrived. England’s latest outing against Australia was abandoned due to rain. 6. Ireland- 7 The Ireland team has done well in parts, but the complete performances have been often missing on most occasions. However, with three points from three games, they still can have a shot at the semi-final spot. The Andrew Balbirnie-led side could post only 128 on the board against Sri Lanka in their first league match. Their weakness against spinners was clearly visible in this game. As a result, the Islanders chased down the total with five overs to spare. In the second game against England, they came with positive intent and had a good first half. In the end, they finished with a total of 157. In reply, the Three Lions fell short of five runs by the DLS method, and Ireland players celebrated the historic victory. Their latest fixture against Afghanistan ended as a washout. 5. Zimbabwe- 7 The Zimbabwean team came into this tournament, with enough match practice and confidence due to the impressive performances in the last few series. With three points in two games, they surely stand the chance to seal the top four spots. In the first game against South Africa, they had a bad start but managed to score 79 in nine overs, with support from Wesley Madhevere. In reply, the South African team were racing to victory, but the rain forced the match to be abandoned. In the second game against Pakistan, they got off to a quick start amassing 48 runs in six overs. However, they could finally score 130, which was only a respectable total. Then, the bowlers produced spirited performances to procure a hard-fought win by one run for them. 4. Sri Lanka- 7.5 The Sri Lankan team have been in good form in the T20I format this year. The complete team performances helped them clinch the Asia Cup 2022 title as well. In this tournament as well, they have done well with the bat as well. The first game against the Irish team witnessed them restricting the opposition to 128. In reply, the top-order batters were proficient with their display to guide the team onto the right path and win the game with five overs still left. Then, they faced Australia and posted 157 on the board, with spirited performances from Pathum Nissanka and Charith Asalanka. In the second half, they did well with the ball, but the home team secured a victory. 3. South Africa - 7.5 The South African team are one of the strongest sides on paper due to a power-packed batting line-up and experienced bowlers. In the T20 World Cup as well, they have done well, with the batters complementing the bowlers as well. In the first game against Zimbabwe, they needed to chase 64 in seven overs. In a matter of three overs, Quinton de Kock blasted his way to help South Africa score 51 runs in three overs, but the incessant rain forced the game to be abandoned. The second game against Bangladesh saw them posting 205 on the board, with Rilee Rossouw and Quinton as the top contributors. Afterwards, the bowlers were proficient with their performances to seal the game by a margin of 104 runs. 2. India - 8.5 One of the favourites to win the trophy, India have been the best side in the tournament owing to their terrific performances. They have two wins in two league games beating Pakistan and the Netherlands. India faced their arch-rivals Pakistan in their first outing in the T20 World Cup, wherein they conceded 159. In reply, the Men in Blue succumbed to the pressure in the first 10 overs. However, the pair of Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya led the recovery, and the former delivered a terrific effort to secure a victory from the jaws of defeat. In the second game against the Netherlands, the captain Rohit Sharma provided a good start, while the duo of Kohli and Suryakumar Yadav were proficient to see India posting 179 on the board. In response, the Dutch team could only score 114, and India won the game by 56 runs. 1. New Zealand- 9 The New Zealand team are a clinical side, who have been doing well across all the formats with fine balance in both departments. In this showpiece event as well, they started off on a strong note, and are expected to continue their momentum. In the first game against Australia, Devon Conway played an anchor role, while other batters like Finn Allen and Jimmy Neesham were his strong support which paved way for them to post 200 on the board. Then, the bowlers were impressive to restrict the Aussie team to dismiss Australia for 111. Their second game against Afghanistan ended as a washout. However, they are still at top of the table owing to a better net run-rate. It will be interesting to see their progression in the tournament ahead.
