The Women's Premier League (WPL) has surely proved to be the platform for the women’s game to grow and has done increasingly well over the past two years. It has given a stage for the players to prove themselves against some of the top players of the league. Unknown players at the start of the season tend to become superstars by the end of the whole tournament. As yet another season ended last night as Royal Challengers Bangalore overcame Delhi Capitals, some of the players played exceedingly well and turned out to be an out-of-the-box option for the teams as well. Let’s take a look at some of the top players who proved to be a surprise during this season of the WPL 2024. Here are the 5 Players who turned out to be surprise packages in WPL 2024: 1. She had a mediocre season during the maiden edition of the Women’s Premier League as she could only take home five wickets after five games and was leaking a lot of runs. Coming into the second season, a lot of eyes were not on Asha but she made sure she got everyone’s attention as she turned out to be the deceptive bowler she is known to be. She ended up claiming 10 wickets and her economy was also around 7. The leg-spinner was crucial to the side in low-scoring encounters and her accurate line and lengths helped the side in sealing games. 2. S Sajana S Sajana (Photo Source -Twitter/X) The all-rounder was purchased by the Mumbai Indians for a base price of INR 10 Lakh during the Women’s Premier League 2024 auction. This was going to be her debut campaign in the WPL and had certainly impressed the team management who were convinced with the signing of the Kerala all-rounder. Her selection turned out to be a great one as she repaid the faith of the management by selecting her in the opening game of the tournament. She won the game by smashing a final ball six versus the Delhi Capitals at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium in Bangalore. Her power-hitting was crucial for the Mumbai Indians in many matches and her short cameos decided games for the franchise as well. 3. Shreyanka Patil Shreyanka Patil. (Photo Source: WPL) The 22-year-old was one of the best bowlers in this season of the Women’s Premier League. She was dominating the opposition batters with her splendid variations and was able to claim wickets at regular intervals for the team. Shreyanka Patil was picked up by the Royal Challengers Bangalore during the inaugural auction of the Women’s Premier League for INR 10 Lakh. The spinner had a torrid season during the maiden edition of the Women’s Premier League as she was able to take only 6 wickets across 7 matches and was leaking runs for the side. It was an unexpected comeback from the spinner as she ended up with the purple cap in the second season. Her performances had improved a lot and she took 13 wickets at an economy of just over 7. 4. Yastika Bhatia Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews. (Photo Source: Twitter/WPL) The Mumbai Indians opener was one of the most improved players for the team this season. With the struggling Hayley Matthews and Natalie Sciver-Brunt not performing on a consistent basis, it was more than important for Yastika to step up. She was bought during the inaugural auctions for a hefty price of INR 1.50 crores. Yastika Bhatia wasn’t able to live up to the expectations and the price set for her during this season. Her attacking cameos in 2024 were crucial for the Mumbai Indians in setting up targets and chasing down the opposition score. Yastika turned out to be a handy wicketkeeper for the side and took a lot of key catches throughout the tournament. 5. Sophie Molineux Sophie M (Photo Source -Twitter/X) The Royal Challengers Bangalore spinner was one of the key players in the Australian team and has been amongst the wickets more often than not. The off-spinner could not compete in the maiden edition due to an injury but put her name for the WPL 2024 Auction. Everyone expected her to perform but she turned out to be the biggest wicket-taking asset for the team. She is known for accurate lines and lengths and was one of the biggest signings for the franchise this season. The left-arm spinner was close to winning the purple cap and was economical as well.
