WPL 2024: Flop Indian players in the tournament

The 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) delivered some memorable moments to cricket fans with its 24-day cricketing action. Eminent Indian players such as Smriti Mandhana, Harmanpreet Kaur, Deepti Sharma, and Jemimah Rodrigues displayed their mettle and proved why they are the best in business. However, there were also some Indian players who failed to perform upto the expectations and disappointed their teams. Ahead of the tournament, they were expected to fare well, however, they fell through and made it to the list of non-performing Indian players of the 2024 WPL. Here are 10 flop Indian players of the 2024 WPL: 10. Sneh Rana Sneh Rana. (Photo Source: Pankaj Nangia/Getty Images) Sneh Rana is one of the most experienced players in the Gujarat Giants (GG) squad. She is also the deputy of captain Beth Mooney and her role was to support Ashleigh Garner to strengthen the team’s spin-bowling department. She appeared in four games for Gujarat and got no wickets. Her economy was 10.06 in the tournament. GG kicked off their journey in the competition with a five-wicket defeat against Mumbai Indians (MI) and she was the most expensive bowler in the game, giving away 21 runs in 2.1 overs at a horrendous economy of 9.69. (Photo Source: Twitter) Shweta Sehrawat hit the headlines after her extraordinary batting display in the 2023 Women’s U-19 T20 World Cup. Her scintillating performance helped India lift the distinguished trophy and Sehrawat became famous in the cricketing circle. In the maiden WPL auction, UP Warriorz (UPW) snapped her up for INR 40 lakh. The youngster failed to justify her price tag with her dismal performance in the competition but the UPW team management didn’t part ways with her. This year, she was expected to take advantage of the opportunity and deliver big numbers to her side. However, the 20-year-old again failed to prove herself. Appearing in eight games, she scored only 108 runs at a strike rate of 101.88 and an average of 15.42. 8. Poonam Khemnar Poonam Khemnar. (Photo Source: WPL) Poonam Khemnar became a part of UPW in the 2024 IPL auction. In the opening WPL season, she donned RCB’s jersey but got only one game. In the new team, she played eight matches but couldn’t play her part efficiently, racking up only 99 runs in six innings at an average of 19.80. In UP’s first three games, Khemnar’s contribution with her bat was paltry. Despite noting her non-performance, skipper Alyssa Healy didn’t drop her. The 29-year-old’s flop show continued in the entire season and Warriorz had a forgettable campaign. 7. Meghna Singh Meghna Singh (Source -WPL) The right-arm pacer Meghna Singh was a part of GG in all eight games but she couldn’t deliver solid numbers to the side. With five wickets in eight innings at a dismal economy of 10.08, she handed disappointment to her team. In Gujarat’s first three games, she not only struggled to be among the wickets but also failed to contain the flow of runs. Against Delhi Capitals (DC) in Bengaluru, she took an impressive four-wicket haul but couldn’t carry her form forward in the next games. 6. Kiran Navgire Kiran-Navgire. (Photo Source: Twitter/WPL) Kiran Navgire’s bat remained quiet in the second WPL season. In the maiden WPL edition, she didn’t provide effective numbers to UPW and this time, she was expected to exhibit her fighting spirit. However, her numbers reveal that she has done her inefficiently again. She showed up in eight matches and scored only 110 runs at an average of 13.75. Except for her fifty against MI, she failed to cross the 20-run mark in every contest. The 29-year-old’s performance proved costly for Warriorz. 5. Anjali Sarvani Anjali Sarvani. (Photo Source: Twitter/WPL) Anjali Sarvani could’ve been magnificent for UPW with her left-arm bowling. Along with the right-arm pacer Saima Thakor, she was expected to provide a variety to UP’s pace attack. However, the speedster had a horrendous season as she appeared in four matches and took only two wickets at an awful economy of 11.44. Against RCB at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, she picked up Sabbineni Meghana’s scalp but gave away 41 runs. Her indisciplined bowling helped the Challengers as they posted a mammoth total of 198 runs on the board. 4. Amanjot Kaur Amandeep Kaur. (Photo Source: X(Twitter) MI failed to defend their title under Harmanpreet Kaur and the reason for their failure was inconsistent performances of key players. Amanjot Kaur, whose job was to serve the side as a middle-order batter looked completely out of rhythm. She got nine matches from the MI team management and contributed only 57 runs to the side in seven innings at a miserable average of 19.00. Against DC at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, she played a decent 42-run knock off just 27 balls but following that game, she struggled to score in double digits. MI were under immense pressure against RCB in their last league game in Delhi. Facing Ellyse Perry’s wrath, Mumbai were four down at a score of 69. In the crunch situation, she was required to stand at the crease and stitch a solid partnership with Natalie Sciver-Brunt to rescue the team. However, she failed to hold her nerves and returned to the pavilion after scoring only four runs. 3. Harleen Deol Harleen Deol. (Photo Source: Twitter/WPL) Harleen Deol played three games for GG in the competition. She couldn’t serve Gujarat for the entire season as she got ruled out of the tournament due to a knee injury after appearing against UP Warriorz at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Deol’s performance in three games was not at all satisfactory as she looked completely defensive and frightened. In the first game against MI, Gujarat scored only 126 due to their terrible batting, and Deol, who was a key stalwart, got dismissed on eight while batting at number three. She continued her flop show in the next two matches. 2. Pooja Vastrakar Pooja Vastrakar ( Photo Source : X / Twitter ) Pooja Vastrakar failed to bolster MI’s fast-bowling unit again in 2024. Despite her ordinary performance in the 2023 WPL, Mumbai retained her for the second edition of the league but she lacked discipline with the ball again. Playing nine games in the tournament, she scalped only five wickets at an economy of 7.30. In the inaugural contest against Delhi, she started her journey in the competition with an expensive spell. Bowling two overs, she gave away 18 runs and got no wickets. In the massive game against RCB, she couldn’t deliver any breakthroughs to the side. 1. Renuka Singh Renuka Singh ( Photo source : X / Twitter ) Challengers won the title under Smriti Mandhana’s leadership but their pacer Renuka Singh’s performance remained ordinary again in the league. Appearing in 10 matches, the pacer grabbed only two wickets at an unimpressive economy of 8.07. Her dismal performance went unnoticed after the title triumph but the RCB team management might not ignore her bowling numbers before going to the 2025 WPL auction. The India pacewoman struggled with the ball in the final against DC, as well.
