8. Tim Paine

Tim Paine made his Test debut in 2010 but the wicketkeeper-batter was not given a consistent run and was sidelined from the side after four matches. He made a national comeback after a gap of seven years in The Ashes 2017-18.

Paine’s moment in the sun came in 2018 when Australian cricket was in shambles after the Sandpaper-gate scandal. The wicketkeeper-batter was entrusted to lead the Test side and the Hobart-born did a great job in reviving Australia’s image in world cricket. Under his leadership, Australia drew The Ashes 2019 and retained the urn. 

However, ahead of The Ashes 2021-22, Paine had to quit captaincy after explicit messages to a female co-worker surfaced. Also, the ace batter took an indefinite break from cricket then and returned to the sport only in October 2022.

Paine’s poor performances in the domestic tournaments in the recent past portray that the 38-year-old is far from his best. And with Alex Carey playing the keeper-batter role for Australia to perfection, Paine’s Test return is unlikely. Thus, the former Australian skipper might retire from Test cricket in 2023.
