5 Biggest controversies that rocked Bangladesh cricket
Bangladesh cricket has been marred with several controversies over the years.
2. Mohammad Ashraful match-fixing scandal
Mohammad Ashraful, who made his international debut in 2001, could’ve become a legend for Bangladesh as, during his career, he played many valuable innings for his team. His innings of 87 runs and 61 runs against South Africa and the West Indies in the 2007 50-overs World Cup and 2007 ICC World Twenty T20 respectively, which came in winning causes, are still fresh in the hearts of many Bangladesh cricket fans.
With such heroics, he became an iconic figure among Bangladesh supporters, but back in 2014, the cricketer was banned for eight years by a disciplinary tribunal for getting involved in match-fixing in the second edition of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) played in 2013.
Along with the ban, he was also punished with a fine of one million takas. Earlier in May 2013, Ashraful admitted to the wrongdoings by saying "I seek forgiveness from all of you for all the wrong-doings that I have committed. I am ashamed of what I have done."
Later, his international ban was reduced to five years and he also featured in domestic cricket of his nation with a partially lifted ban. In 2018, he returned to the BPL again and played for Chittagong Vikings but things were not the same for him this time as his image was hit hard after destroying the sanctity of the game.
