Chennai Super Kings (CSK) didn’t have a great outing in the 15th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL), as they won only four out of 14 contests. Before the start of the competition this year, CSK, along with Mumbai Indians (MI), were seen as contenders to win the title. No one expected the Men in Yellow to produce a miserable display in the 2022 edition considering their track record in the league. In the next season, the franchise will look to forget the failure of the 2022 edition and get their old form back. After 15 seasons of the league, CSK are the second-most successful franchise after Mumbai Indians (MI), winning four trophies. On that note, let us take a look at some major records that CSK hold in IPL history: 5. Lowest total defended In the 54th game of the second edition of the IPL, CSK and Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings) faced each other at Kingsmead, Durban. It was a do-or-die match for both teams obtain a spot in the semi-finals. Winning the crucial toss, CSK skipper MS Dhoni elected to bat, and the openers George Bailey and Parthiv Patel gave an ideal start by adding 40 runs in just 4.5 overs. However, after the fall of both openers, CSK's innings started faltering due to the disciplined bowling of the Kings XI Punjab. With the contribution of Suresh Raina (20 runs) and Jacob Oram (17 runs), the team crossed the 100-run mark and posted the total of 116/9 in 20 overs. Defending the small target, the Men in Yellow displayed courage as their bowlers tore apart Punjab's batting line-up to end their innings on 92/8. Muttiah Muralitharan proved himself as one of the valuable assets for the franchise by becoming the Player of the Match for his match-winning spell of 4-0-8-2. 4. Most appearances in playoffs Chennai Super Kings could not participate in the IPL 2016 and 2017 editions following the spot fixing scandal in IPL 2013. However, CSK still hold the record of qualifying the most times with 11 appearances. From 2008-2019, CSK had a spectacular journey in the league as they ended up runners-up five times, and won the title thrice in 2010, 2011 and 2018. Along with that, they also qualified for the playoffs consecutively 10 times from 2008-2019, which a record in the history of the league. So far, except CSK, no other team in the league has been able to go past the double-digit mark when it comes to entering the Playoffs. In 2021, CSK played the Playoffs for the 11th time, and they again got successful by crushing Delhi Capitals by four wickets in the 1st Qualifier to enter the final. 3. Most wickets in an IPL season CSK failed to win their third title in IPL 2023 as they lost to Mumbai Indians in the final by 23 runs. But throughout the tournament, the team gave many happy moments to their supporters by playing aggressive cricket. With the diligence and determination, they topped the points table in the group stage, winning 11 of 16 games. Dwayne Bravo came out as the most impactful bowler in the tournament, picking 32 wickets in 18 games, which is the most wickets in an IPL edition. Later, in the 2021 edition of the tournament, Harshal Patel from Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) clinched 32 wickets in 15 matches and equalled Bravo’s record. After the achievement of Patel, Bravo and the Indian pacer are now joint record-holder of the most wickets in an IPL season. 2. MS Dhoni’s record for most matches as a captain MS Dhoni has led CSK in all 13 seasons of the IPL, which makes him the longest-serving captain for any franchise in the league. In the 15 years of his captaincy career, Dhoni has turned out to be a terrific leader, winning 123 out of 210 games with a success rate of 58.85%. Under his charismatic leadership, CSK also lifted the IPL trophy four times, which makes them the second-most successful franchise in the history of the IPL. Currently, he is followed by the Mumbai Indians skipper Rohit Sharma, who has led his team in 143 games. Dhoni hung his boots as a skipper and gave the captaincy mantle to Ravindra Jadeja ahead of 2022 season, however, Jadeja stepped down mid season because of his poor run as Dhoni took the responsibility again. In the next edition of the league too, Dhoni could be seen leading the side again and setting another monumental feat for the CSK by winning another trophy. 1. Most appearances in final In the 15 editions of the IPL, CSK have made nine appearances in the final. In the inaugural edition of the tournament, they lost the close final to Rajasthan Royals (RR) on the last delivery of the match. But in 2010, the franchise made it to the finals of the tournament again and got successful too in clinching their first title by vanquishing the Mumbai Indians by 22 runs. In 2011, defending the title, the team played incredibly and qualified for the final of the tournament two consecutive times. This time, they faced Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) and thrashed them by 58 runs to lift their second trophy. After failing to win three finals post their second IPL trophy win, CSK concluded the 2018 season by getting their hands on the trophy for the third time. In 2019, Dhoni & his men played their eighth final of the league, but this time, they couldn’t get the better of their arch-rivals Mumbai Indians (MI) and lost by just one run. In 2021, CSK played the decider again, for the record ninth time, and they emerged victorious against the KKR by 27 runs to lift their fourth trophy.
