After witnessing their team lose to Bangladesh in their opening match, Sri Lanka fans got a huge heartbreak as their side lost the do-or-die match against Afghanistan in an embarrassing manner. In the crucial match at the Sheikh Zayed Cricket Stadium, Sri Lanka failed to survive under pressure and lost to the Afghan side by 91 runs.

Batting first after winning the toss, Afghanistan amassed 249 runs on the board. Mohammad Shahzad and Ihsanullah delivered fine knocks of 34 (47) and 45 (65) and played their part efficiently. After the dismissal of both openers, Rahmat Shah dominated Sri Lankan bowlers and notched up 72 runs off 90 deliveries.

Pursuing the total, Sri Lanka lost Kusal Mendis early but the 53-run partnership between Upul Tharanga and Dhananjaya de Silva gave some relief. However, Afghan bowlers struck down the Sri Lankan batters which led to the collapse. Sri Lanka folded their innings on 158 and with this heart-wrenching defeat, they also got eliminated from the tournament.
