5 players who were part of 2018 Asia Cup but wouldn't be in the 2023 edition
Comparing India’s Asia Cup 2023 squad to that of the 2018 edition where few champions missed out on selection this time.
2. Shikhar Dhawan
Shikhar Dhawan played an instrumental role with his bat in India’s scintillating Asia Cup triumph. The southpaw notched up 342 runs with a couple of tons in five games and ended up as the leading run-getter in the series. He also became the recipient of the Player of the Series award for his stunning batting display.
Dhawan has been away from international cricket after India’s tour of Bangladesh in December 2022. Playing three matches in the tour, Dhawan scored only 18 runs in three games and lost his place to Shubman Gill, who is currently serving India’s ODI team as an opener efficiently.
On August 21, captain Rohit Sharma and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) chief selector Ajit Agarkar announced the 17-member Indian team for the Asia Cup 2023, whereby Dhawan was left out of the squad. This led the veteran’s supporters to discourage his exclusion by showing support for him over social media.
