After a frustrating time at Kings XI Punjab (now Punjab Kings), Ravichandran Ashwin decided to leave the franchise and come to the auction. He communicated the same to the team management and despite him being the captain, the team management let him go as they are never shy to let players go and build afresh.

Looking at a good opportunity, Delhi cashed in and bought Ashwin for INR 7.60 in the auction. Despite having Amit Mishra in the squad, Delhi wanted to invest more in the spin department as the home conditions in Feroz Shah Kotla were heavily assisting the spinners. He was expected to create an instant impact in the team but that didn’t happen.

He played 15 games in the 2020 edition, in which, the Chennai-born cricketer picked up 13 wickets at an average of 30.07. That season, Delhi qualified for the final as well but lost to Mumbai Indians by five wickets. In the 2021 edition, Ashwin played 13 games and picked up seven wickets at an average of 47.28.
