2. Most runs in an ODI innings as captain
India clashed against West Indies for the fourth game of the five-match ODI series in December 2011. Sehwag, who was captain of the side in that series, was in his elements and put on a show with the bat. He played a breathtaking knock of 219 runs off 149 deliveries to help the Men the Blue post 418 runs on the board.
With the incredible innings, Sehwag became the captain to have scored the most runs in an ODI innings. The previous best back then was Sanath Jayasuriya’s 189-run effort against India in October 2000. Even after 11 years of Sehwag achieving the landmark, the record is intact with the former Indian batter.
Rohit Sharma came close when he plundered 208* runs in 153 balls against Sri Lanka in December 2017. Rohit is the incumbent captain of the Indian team and one might argue that he can be the one to break Sehwag’s record. But the veteran batter is at the twilight of his career and thus, the chances of him surpassing Sehwag’s tally are quite grim.
Generally, double-centurions have been top-order batters as they have the opportunity to play more balls. Barring Rohit, there is hardly any ODI captain who bats at the top order and has the game to score over 219 runs in an innings. Thus, one might not witness Sehwag’s record tally being broken in the years to come.
