5 teams that have not faced India in T20 World Cup history

The T20 World Cup 2022 saw the participation of 16 teams. But it was not the case that only the top tier teams set the stage ablaze by their phenomenal performances, teams such as the Netherlands, Ireland, Scotland, Zimbabwe, and Namibia missed no chance to stun cricket fans and caused upsets. Looking at the displays of these small cricketing nations in the T20 World Cup, it can be said that the T20 World Cup 2024 can become more interesting with the participation of 20 teams. This year, one of the favourites of the tournament South Africa were knocked out of the T20 World Cup after suffering defeat at the hands of the Netherlands. While playing eight editions of the T20 World Cup, India have played against all big teams such as Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and England among others but there are a few teams that the Men in Blue haven't played against in the mega T20 event. Here are some teams India haven’t locked horns with in T20 World Cups: 5. Oman Oman played their first T20 World Cup in 2016 by playing the First Round (Group A) against teams such as Bangladesh, Ireland, and the Netherlands. In three games, they lost against an experienced side like Bangladesh (by 54 runs DLS method), but with their win over Ireland by two wickets, they showed their caliber. In 2021, Oman appeared in T20 World Cup for the second time and played in the preliminary First Round of the T20 World Cup 2021. Placed in Group B alongside teams like Bangladesh, Scotland, and Papua New Guinea, Oman had to do something special to go to the Super 12 stage but the team could rack up only two points after beating Papua New Guinea. In the next T20 World Cup in 2024, they could play quality teams including India also as the International Cricket Council (ICC) has increased the number of teams in the competition. In T20 World Cups, Oman is one of the teams that India haven’t faced till now. 4. Papua New Guinea Papua New Guinea made their T20 World Cup debut in 2021 by making finding a place in the First Round. Appearing in the event for the first time, the team faced the stiff challenge of overcoming Scotland, Bangladesh, and Oman in Group B, but unfortunately for them, they lost all their three games and crashed out of the competition. They couldn't make it to the T20 World Cup 2022 as they failed to deliver impressive performances in the qualifier leading up to the tournament. In the next edition of the tournament in the United States and the West Indies, many small teams could get a chance to play against big teams which means Papua New Guinea could also face some top-notch teams if they do well ahead of the event. In T20 World Cup history, India have never played against Papua New Guinea but if PNG lift their game leading into the forthcoming edition of the tournament, we might see them taking the field against the Men in Blue. 3. Hong Kong Hong Kong, after qualifying for the preliminary rounds in the World T20 2014 and 2016, showed signs of growth in the T20 format of the game. Their victory against the hosts Bangladesh by two wickets in 2014 is still one of their all-time memorable moments. Going through Hong Kong’s performance against the experienced Bangladesh team in the 2014 World T20, it was expected that the team will display progress in the 2016 T20 World Cup too by qualifying for the Super 10 stage but without winning any contest in the 2016 installment of the tournament, Hong Kong couldn't meet the expectations. In 2024, after almost eight years, Hong Kong will eye an opportunity to play in the T20 World Cup again by doing well in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 regional qualifier tournament. In the Asia Cup 2022, India faced Hong Kong for the first time in the T20 format and the Men in Blue won the contest by 40 runs. When it comes to T20 World Cups, Hong Kong is among one of those teams that India are yet to face, and if they (Hong Kong) keep on performing consistently then one might see them lock horns with India at the upcoming edition of the tournament. 2. United Arab Emirates (UAE) The United Arab Emirates (UAE) appeared in the T20 World Cup for the first time in 2014 in Bangladesh. To advance to the Super 10 round, they had to overcome the challenges in the form of the Netherlands, Zimbabwe, and Ireland in Group B of the first stage of the tournament but after losing against all three opponents, they crashed out of the tournament. After almost eight years, they returned to the competition again to play in the First Round of the T20 World Cup 2022, and this time, they improved their showing by winning one game against Namibia. In the end, the UAE gave a reason for their spectators to smile and had a decent outing to reflect upon. For the next T20 World Cup, the UAE would look to deliver their best in the regional qualifier tournament to feature in the group of top 20 teams to play against the giants. India have never played any T20 World Cup game against the UAE, and in the next installment of the World T20 one might see them cross swords with India. 1. Nepal In 2014, Nepal made their T20 World Cup debut by playing in the fifth edition of the tournament in Bangladesh. Playing in the First Round, Nepal were placed in Group A to compete with Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Hong Kong. Appearing for the first time in the T20 World Cup, the debutants impressed cricket supporters with their performances by beating Hong Kong and Afghanistan. With two wins in three games, Nepal could’ve gone to the Super 10 round but Bangladesh with an equal number of victories and a better net run rate made it to the Super 10 stage. Nepal are yet to feature in the tournament since then but if they manage to make it to the next installment of the T20 World Cup slated to be co-hosted by the USA and the West Indies then one can see them square off against their Asian neighbours India for the first time in the T20 World Cup history.
