2022 has not been a year for One-day Internationals. Since the participating nations of the T20 World Cup 2022 were more focused on the marquee tournament, the 50-over format took a back seat, and many teams fielded their second-string sides in the ODI matches. Though ODIs this year have been thin on quantity, they have not lacked quality. Teams have given their all on the cricket field and courtesy of which, fans have witnessed some nail-biting contests. Further, there have been certain players who have set the 50-over format on fire with their breathtaking performances. Here is the best ODI XI of 2022: 1. Babar Azam Babar Azam has been a run machine in the international arena across formats. He has featured in 92 ODIs and accumulated 4664 runs at an average of 59.79. Talking about the shortest format, he has scored 3355 runs in 99 matches at a strike rate of 127.80. The Pakistan skipper has led from the front in the ODIs this calendar year and scored 679 runs in nine matches at a strike rate of 90.77, which includes three centuries. Babar has been rock-solid at the top of the order and held the innings together. The ace batter’s presence at the crease has allowed stroke makers around him to play with freedom. The ace batter was in pristine touch when the Men in Green locked horns with Australia for a three-match ODI series, smashing two glorious tons and one half-century to help his team register a 2-1 series win over the Aussies. He was adjudged the Player of the Series for his incredible performance. 2. Shubman Gill Shubman Gill had a stellar run in the 2022 season of the Indian Premier League, which saw him amass 483 runs in 16 games for Gujarat Titans at a strike rate of 132.22. Courtesy of his astonishing showings in the lucrative T20 tournament, the 23-year-old made a comeback to India’s ODI squad. Gill has been phenomenal with the bat this year and made the most of the opportunities that have come his way. The Punjab-born has featured in 12 games in the 50-over format and notched up 638 runs that too at an impressive strike rate of 102.57, which includes four half-centuries and one century. The ace batter has put up an exhibition of his elegant stroke play time and again and put top-drawer bowling attacks under the pump. Due to consistent performances, Gill has kept himself in contention for the opening slot for the 2023 World Cup. The dashing stroke maker would look to carry on the good work going forward and make his case stronger for the next year’s marquee tournament. 3. Shreyas Iyer Shreyas Iyer has been a run bank for India in the white-ball circuit. The ace batter has featured in 39 ODIs and notched up 1537 runs at an average of 48.03. Talking about the T20Is, he has scored 1043 runs in 49 matches at a strike rate of 135.98. Iyer has been quite magnificent in the 50-over format this year and has piled on runs for fun. He has featured in 17 matches and scored 724 runs at a superb average of 55.69. He has steadied the ship when the team has been in choppy waters and shepherded the innings beautifully. Besides anchoring the innings, Iyer has the ability to swiftly switch gears and take the opposition’s bowling attack to the cleaners. Given the rich vein of form the Mumbai-born is in, he can be the player to solve India’s never-ending number-four conundrum leading up to the 2023 World Cup. 4. Travis Head Travis Head has been a proven performer for Australia in the ODIs. The Adelaide-born has featured in 51 matches and scored 1823 runs at a strike rate of 95.74. Also, he has been quite handy with the ball and bagged 14 wickets at an economy of 5.82. Head’s stocks in the ODIs have been on a meteoric rise of late. He has dismantled top-drawer bowling attacks with his swashbuckling stroke play and has been a game-changer for his side. In 2022, he has featured in nine matches and accumulated 550 runs at a strike rate of 112.24. Head was in great nick in the recently concluded three-match ODI series against England and hammered the opposition’s bowling line-up all around the park. He scored 240 runs in three games at a strike rate of 111.62, including an exquisite knock of 152 runs in 130 deliveries in the final game of the series. 5. Tom Latham (wk) Tom Latham has been an integral part of the New Zealand team in ODIs and the longest format of the game. Test cricket has been Latham’s stronger suit, where he has amassed 4623 runs in 68 matches at an average of 40.55. He has been excellent in the 50-over format too, and has scored 3382 runs in 117 games at a strike rate of 86.18. The wicketkeeper-batter has been quite remarkable in the ODIs this calendar year and piled on 558 runs in 15 games at a strike rate of 101.27. Slotting in at the middle order, Latham has read the game situation well and adapted accordingly. He has withered the storm when the team has been in trouble and also displayed the aggressive aspect of his game when needed to demolish bowling attacks. The Kiwi batter has played some blistering knocks in 2022 and one of the most prominent of them came in the first game of the three-match ODI series against India. Chasing 307, Latham arrived into the crease with his team three-down for 88 and the opposition dictating terms. The Canterbury-born took his time to get his eye in and then knocked the wind off the Indian bowling attack, smashing 145* runs off 104 deliveries to take New Zealand across the line. 6. Sikandar Raza Sikandar Raza has been one of the finest all-rounders Zimbabwe has produced. He has been a match-winner with both bat and ball and has proven his mettle in the international arena time and again. He has scored 3656 runs in 123 ODIs at an average of 36.56 and bagged 70 wickets at an economy of 4.89. The ace all-rounder has been quite remarkable in the 50-over format this calendar year, especially with the bat. The flamboyant batter has played 15 ODIs and smashed 645 runs at an average of 49.61. Also, he has bagged eight wickets in those outings at an economy of 5.03. When Zimbabwe faced Bangladesh for a three-match ODI series, Raza was at his best and struck two glorious centuries to help his team script a historic series win against the Bangla Tigers. The ace all-rounder also brought his A-game into play in the final game of the three-match ODI series against India and smashed a spectacular century to give KL Rahul & co. a run for their money. 7. Mehidy Hasan Miraz Mehidy Hasan Miraz has been a vital cog for Bangladesh in the longest format of the game. The off-spinner has formed a great foil to Shakib Al Hasan and ripped through top-quality batting line-ups. Mehidy has featured in 35 Tests and bagged 135 wickets at an average of 34.15. Also, he has been a useful contributor with the bat and scored 1089 runs for his side. However, this year the Khulna-born has shown his all-round prowess in the ODIs as well. He has strangled batters with his consistent lines and lengths and picked up 24 scalps in 15 games at an economy of 5.44. On the batting front, Mehidy has played crucial knocks slotting in at lower down the order and scored 330 runs at a strike rate of 84.18. The 25-year-old was quite exceptional in the recently concluded three-match ODI series against India, especially with the bat. In the first game, he played a crucial knock under extreme pressure, scoring 38* runs in 39 balls and stitching a 51-run stand for the tenth wicket with Mustafizur Rahman to take his team across the line. In the second ODI, Mehidy arrived at the crease with Bangladesh in a spot of bother at 69 for 6 and took the Indian bowling attack to the cleaners, smashing a brilliant century in 83 deliveries to take his team to a competitive total of 271. The right-handed batter’s marvelous innings proved to be a match-winning one as the Bangla Tigers edged the Men in Blue by five runs. 8. Alzarri Joseph Alzarri Joseph has been a consistent performer for West Indies across formats. The 26-year-old has featured in 54 ODIs and bagged 87 wickets at an economy of 5.21. He has also proved to be quite handy with the bat and scored 332 runs at an average of 18.44. In 2022, Joseph has been quite sensational in the 50-over format. He has been the go-to man for the West Indies when in need of wickets and has delivered on most occasions. The ace pacer has rattled batters with his express pace and picked up 27 wickets in 17 ODIs at an economy of 4.61. Also, he has contributed 142 runs with the bat at an average of 20.28. The Antigua-born seems to like playing against India as he has been amongst the wickets every time he has faced them for an ODI this year. Adam Zampa Adam Zampa is Australia’s premier spinner in white-ball cricket. He is a wily customer with the ability to deceive batsmen in the air and off the pitch. The 30-year-old has featured in 72 T20Is and bagged 82 wickets at an economy of 6.93. Talking about the ODIs, he has picked up 127 wickets in 76 games at an economy of 5.44. In 2022, Zampa has been simply stunning in the 50-over format. He has bamboozled batters with his variations and has been a major strike force in the middle phases of the innings. The ace leg-spinner has played 12 ODIs and bagged 30 wickets at an economy of 4.99. Zampa weaved his magic in the three-match ODI series against England as he took 11 scalps in three games at an economy of 5.13. His bowling exploits were instrumental in Australia clean-sweeping the white-ball world champions. 10. Trent Boult Trent Boult is one of the best left-arm pacers in world cricket at the moment. The 33-year-old, along with Tim Southee has carried the mantle of New Zealand’s pace attack in ODIs and Tests for over a decade. He has featured in 99 ODIs and bagged 187 wickets at an economy of 4.93. Boult has displayed a swing-bowling masterclass in the 50-over format this calendar year and destroyed top-drawer batting line-ups for fun. Though the ace pacer has featured in mere six ODIs, he has taken a total of 18 wickets at an excellent economy of 3.98. In the ODI series against the Aussies, the veteran pacer wreaked havoc with the ball and bagged 10 wickets in three games, including two four-wicket hauls. However, Boult’s valiant effort did not prove to be enough as the Black Caps lost the series 3-0. 11. Mohammed Siraj Mohammed Siraj has taken international cricket by storm with his dazzling bowling performances. Test cricket has been Siraj’s stronger suit, where he has taken 40 scalps in 13 matches at an average of 30.77. However, this year he has shown his bowling might in the white-ball circuit too. In 2022, the 28-year-old has featured in 15 ODIs and bagged 24 wickets at an economy of 4.62. Siraj has made the ball talk at the start of the innings and has provided India with early breakthroughs. He has been equally brilliant in the middle and death overs, stemming the flow of runs and providing timely wickets. Whenever the veteran duo of Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami has been unavailable, Siraj has been entrusted to lead the pace attack and he has done the job with perfection. Talking about the ODI series against Bangladesh, the Hyderadad-born was impeccable with the ball, bagging six wickets in three matches at an economy of 5.28.
