Cricketers and their superstitions
In international cricket, it's been witnessed that some players believe in superstitions to carry luck on the field while serving their teams.
4. Mahela Jayawardene and his superstition of kissing his bat
Mahela Jayawardene was one of the greatest players to serve Sri Lanka in international cricket. In ODIs, he is the third leading run-getter for his side with 12381 runs in 413 innings. While in Tests, he is the second-highest run-scorer for his team with 11814 runs in 252 innings of 149 matches.
As a skipper, he led Sri Lanka to the final of the 2007 World Cup. With the bat, he scored 548 runs with a century and four fifties in 11 matches of the tournament. In the 2011 World Cup, he became the sixth batter to score a century in the ODI World Cup finals. Against India at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, he hit an unbeaten 103 off 88 and broke into the record books.
Jaywardene’s batting skills got him spectacular fame and his incredible fan base among Sri Lanka cricket supporters corroborates this fact. The former Sri Lanka stalwart is one of the players who believes in superstition. During the early phase of his career, he had the tendency to kiss his bat before kicking off his innings. After a few years of his career, he started doing it after scoring centuries and reaching milestones.
