Five current Indian cricketers who were dropped after standout performance

India played their first international match on June 25, 1932. It has been over 90 years since the historic moment took place and India have emerged as a heavyweight cricketing nation. Presently, there is an insane pool of talent blossoming in the Indian domestic circuit and hence, there is a great tussle for a spot in the playing XI. Many cricket pundits term the cut-throat competition for places as a happy headache as it pushes players to do well. However, the downside to the problem of plenty is that players get dropped despite delivering a standout performance for the nation. Here are five current Indian cricketers who got dropped after giving a standout performance: 5. Sanju Samson India faced Ireland in the final game of the two-match T20I series in Dublin in June 2022. After electing to bat first, Hardik Pandya & co. did not have a great start as they lost Kishan early. However, Deepak Hooda and Sanju Samson joined hands and what followed was just carnage. The duo played a fearless brand of cricket and put the opposition under the pump. Samson hammered 77 runs off 42 balls whereas Hooda smashed a blistering century. They helped India post a daunting total of 225 runs in 20 overs. Hardik & co. won the game by four runs, clinching the series 2-0. India's next T20I assignment was against England. Samson was in the squad for the first T20I and was in the reckoning for a spot in the playing XI. However, the team management selected wicketkeeper-batters Ishan Kishan and Dinesh Karthik, and the Trivandrum batter, who fared well in his last outing, had to warm the bench. 4. Ravi Bishnoi India took on West Indies in the final game of the five-match T20I series against West Indies in August 2022 in Lauderhill. Hardik & co. batted first and posted 188 runs on the board, with Shreyas Iyer (64 runs off 40 deliveries) top-scoring. In response, the hosts were bundled out for mere 100 runs. Ravi Bishnoi was the wrecker-in-chief, bagging four wickets for just 16 runs in 2.4 overs. The ace spinner also ended the series as India’s leading wicket-taker, picking up eight scalps in three games at an economy of 6.46. However, the team management did not stick with Bishnoi going forward. In Asia Cup 2022, India selected leg-spinner Yuzvendra Chahal ahead of the 22-year-old in the starting games of the tournament. 3. Kuldeep Yadav India clashed against Bangladesh in the first game of the two-match Test series in December 2022 in Chattogram. It was the first time in the year 2022 that Kuldeep Yadav was representing India in the longest format of the game, and the ace spinner put on a show with both bat and ball. Kuldeep stitched a vital 92 run-stand for the eighth wicket with Ravichandran Ashwin to help his team post 404 runs on the board. He ended up scoring 40 runs off 114 balls. Then in Bangladesh's first innings, the left-arm wrist spinner spun the web around the opposition and bagged an incredible five-wicket haul. Kuldeep carried on his good work with the ball and took three wickets while giving away 73 runs in Bangladesh's second innings. The ace spinner was adjudged the Player of the Match for his stunning all-round performance. However, despite being India's shining star in the first game, the 28-year-old was dropped from the second Test match as the team managment decided to play an extra seam bowler in Jaydev Unadkat at the expense of Kuldeep. 2. Ishan Kishan India encountered Bangladesh in the final game of the three-match ODI series in December 2022 in Chattogram. The Bangla Tigers, having won the first two matches of the series, were eyeing a series sweep, however, Ishan Kishan was up for the challenge. The wicketkeeper-batter put on an exhibition of his swashbuckling stroke play and dismantled Bangladesh’s bowling attack by smashing 210 runs off 131 deliveries to help India post a daunting total of 409. He touched the 200 mark off 126 balls, recording the fastest-ever double ton in 50-over cricket for India. The Men in Blue won the match by 227 runs. Despite his record-breaking knock, Kishan did not find a place in the starting XI for the first game of the ongoing ODI series against Sri Lanka as Shubman Gill was picked ahead of him. The latter, however, made the opportunity count, scoring 70 off 60. 1. Karun Nair India locked horns with England in the final match of the five-match Test series in December 2016 in Chennai. England batted first and posted 477 runs on the board courtesy of Moeen Ali’s sensational knock of 146 off 262. Karun Nair led India’s charge with the bat and hammered England’s bowling attack all across the park. There was no bowler who could escape the Indian batter’s wrath as he smashed 303* off 381 balls, becoming the second Indian batter after Virender Sehwag to score a triple ton. However, his magnificent knock was not enough to keep his place in the playing XI. In India’s next Test assignment, a one-off Test against Bangladesh, Ajinkya Rahane pipped the Jodhpur-born for a slot in the middle order.
