The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has announced the Indian team for the 2023 World Cup to be played in October-November. This time, the marquee ODI event will be held in India and as hosts, Rohit Sharma and his men will be expected to lift the coveted trophy at the iconic Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

After unprecedented success in 2011, India reached the semis in 2015 and 2019 but couldn’t clinch the title. In the 2019 World Cup, they had a perfect opportunity to win the trophy under Virat Kohli. Throughout the competition, they played an aggressive brand of cricket and routed teams such as Australia, South Africa, and Pakistan in the round-robin stage. &nbsp; &nbsp;

However, India’s batting collapsed in the crucial semi-final match against New Zealand at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground while following the total of 240 which led to the team’s elimination from the competition. Just a month ahead of the 2023 World Cup, it’s time to know about the players who helped Team India reach the semi-final in the 2019 edition of the distinguished ODI tournament.

He also notched up five tons in the competition and broke the record of Sri Lanka’s former wicketkeeper batter Kumar Sangakkara, who was holding the record for scoring the most centuries in a World Cup edition (four centuries in the 2015 World Cup). In the semi-final match, he departed on one after facing four deliveries.

Rohit, who concluded the series as the highest run-scorer, hasn’t showcased his best in recent years. In February 2022, he became India’s all-format captain but so far, he hasn’t proven his captaincy skills. The veteran will look to be impactful in the upcoming 2023 World Cup with his leadership and batting prowess to help India lift the coveted trophy for the third time. &nbsp;

Riding on his fine knock, India beat the five-time champions by a comfortable margin of 36 runs. The left-handed batter also received the Player of the Match award for his excellent innings.&nbsp;During the match against the Aussies, the dashing opener fractured his thumb while facing a delivery from Nathan Coulter-Nile. &nbsp; &nbsp;

The veteran was expected to make a comeback in the playing XI before the knockout round but before the Afghanistan game, it was announced that he would leave the camp and Rishabh Pant would replace him in the remainder of the competition. Dhawan failed to break into the 2023 World Cup squad due to his declining performance in the international circuit.&nbsp;

Virat Kohli, who was the skipper then, led the team confidently and took it to the semi-final. With the bat, he made a vital contribution of 443 runs with five half-centuries in nine matches and ended up as the second-highest run-scorer for the team in the competition. In the semi-final, Kohli joined Rohit in the pavilion early after getting dismissed by Trent Boult on one.

In December 2022, Rohit Sharma was handed the ODI captaincy mantle following Kohli’s unsuccess as a skipper in the 2021 T20 World Cup and South Africa Test series. From November 2019 to September 2022, the batting maestro went through the lowest phase of his career as during this period, he not only lost captaincy but also failed to notch up an international ton. &nbsp; &nbsp; Almost after a three-year century drought, he brought cheers to the faces of Team India supporters with his exceptional hundred against Afghanistan in the 2022 <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/asia-cup/" title="Asia Cup" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Asia Cup</a>. Following this inning, he also played an unbeaten 82-run knock off 53 against Pakistan in the 2022 T20 World Cup and took India home. In the upcoming World Cup, he will be expected to shine with his bat and help India become world champions again.

KL Rahul’s role was to provide strength to India’s batting unit in the previous World Cup. With Dhawan’s presence in the first two games, he was given the task to bat in the middle-order. Following the left-handed batter’s injury, he became the opening partner of vice-captain Rohit for the remaining games.

Appearing in nine matches in the competition, he scored 361 runs with a ton and a couple of fifties. In India’s seven-wicket win against Sri Lanka, he played a match-winning innings of 111 off 118. After the 2019 World Cup, Rahul has gone through a lot of struggle. The right-handed batter has failed to be impactful against quality sides in the last few years.

Along with that, he has also choked in big games which makes him a favourite target of his critics and social media trollers. MS Dhoni made his last appearance in international cricket in the 2019 World Cup. The former <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-news/asia-cup-2023-india-vs-pakistan-weather-forecast-and-pitch-report-of-r-premadasa-stadium/" title=" India " target="_blank" rel="noopener">India </a>skipper played all nine matches and scored 273 runs in eight innings at a strike rate of 87.78. During the competition, the wicketkeeper batter was criticised for his slow innings against Afghanistan.

Against New Zealand, when India were heading towards an embarrassing loss with their score of 92 at a loss of six wickets, Dhoni held his nerves and stitched a crucial 116-run partnership with Ravindra Jadeja for the seventh wicket. In the end, India lost the game by 18 runs but the veteran’s 50-run knock kept the team alive in the chase till the last over.

On the occasion of India’s 73rd Independence Day, Dhoni announced his retirement from international cricket. Currently, the legendary wicketkeeper batter serves Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the Indian Premier League (IPL). After international retirement, he led CSK to a couple of title victories (2021 and 2023) as a skipper in the cash-rich league.

Hardik Pandya was one of the essential members of the team in the 2019 World Cup. His all-round excellence helped the team in all departments of the game. As a batter, he reinforced India’s middle order racking up 226 runs in nine matches at an impressive strike rate of 112.43.

With the ball, he picked up 10 wickets at an economy of 5.65 and strengthened the team’s pace attack. In 2022, the talented all-rounder became the skipper of <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/t20/ipl-indian-premier-league/gujarat-titans/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Gujarat Titans</a> (GT) in IPL, and under his captaincy, the franchise won the first title in its maiden league appearance.

The 29-year-old will be the deputy of captain Rohit in the Indian team for the 2023 World Cup and this time, the team management will want him to display his best side as an all-rounder. The Gujarat-born India stalwart has racked up 1753 runs and 74 wickets in 79 outings in his seven-year ODI career.

Ravindra Jadeja was a part of India’s 15-member World Cup 2019 squad but the veteran got a chance to feature in India’s playing XI for only two matches. In the last league game against Sri Lanka, captain Kohli included him in the 11-member squad, and grabbing the opportunity with both hands, the veteran all-rounder delivered a thrifty spell of 1/40 in his 10 overs.

Noting his efficiency with the ball against Sri Lanka, the team management continued him in the playing XI in the semi-final game against <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-teams/new-zealand/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">New Zealand</a>. Playing the knockout match, the veteran removed New Zealand opener Henry Nicholls in the 19th over of the match. While with the bat, his 77-run innings helped the Men in Blue go close to the target of 240 runs.

Jadeja’s name has featured in India’s World Cup 2023 squad and his job will be to bolster India’s spin attack with Kuldeep Yadav. The 34-year-old will also be essential in the batting unit due to his lower-middle-order batting. &nbsp;

Rishabh Pant became part of India’s camp after Dhawan got ruled out due to his thumb injury. The left-handed wicketkeeper batter got a chance to make his World Cup debut against England at the Edgbaston Cricket Ground. In his maiden World Cup match, he contributed 32 runs off 29 deliveries to the team while chasing an enormous total of 338 runs.

The wicketkeeper batter continued his form against Bangladesh, scoring a swift 48 off 41, with seven boundaries (six fours and a maximum). However, in the big game against the Black Caps in the semi-final, he failed to showcase his best with the bat after the top-order collapse and gave his wicket to Mitchell Santner on 32.&nbsp;

The youngster played four matches in the competition and scored 116 runs at a strike rate of 89.23. Pant isn’t a part of India’s 2023 World Cup squad as he is yet to <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/social-tracker-cricket/rishabh-pant-shares-video-of-practice-drill-from-nca/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">recover from the injuries</a> he got in the accident on the Delhi-Dehradun national highway.&nbsp;

Bhuvneshwar Kumar strengthened India’s pace attack with his exceptional fast-bowling talent. The speedster appeared in six matches in the marquee tournament and took 10 wickets at an economy of 5.20. In India’s 36-run win over Australia, he picked up 3/50 figures in his 10 overs.

After the <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-teams/pakistan/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Pakistan</a> match, he stayed out of cricketing action for more than two weeks due to his left hamstring issue. The speedster bagged 3/43 figures in his 10-over spell against New Zealand in the semi-final at the Old Trafford Cricket Ground and ended up as the highest wicket-taker for India in the contest.

This time, Bhuvneshwar isn’t included in India’s 2023 World Cup squad. He played his last one-day match against South Africa at Paarl in January 2022. Following his plummeted form, the BCCI dropped the veteran pacer from India’s ODI team that toured England in July 2022.

Before the Indian team announcement for the 2023 World Cup, there were extremely high chances that the 33-year-old wouldn’t be picked, and when the chief selector Ajit Agarkar and captain Rohit Sharma declared the 15-member squad, Bhuvneshwar’s name didn’t feature in it.

Jasprit Bumrah spearheaded India’s pace attack in the previous edition of the World Cup. He notched up 18 wickets in nine matches at an economy of 4.41 and ended up as the fifth-leading wicket-taker in the competition. With the ball, he delivered fine starts to the team consistently with the ball.&nbsp;

The paceman claimed the scalps of Hashim Amla and <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-players/quinton-de-kock/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Quinton de Kock</a> early against South Africa and helped India start positively in the competition. Against the Kiwis in the semi-final in Greater Manchester, he provided an early breakthrough to the team in the form of Martin Guptill. &nbsp; In the upcoming World Cup, he will be seen leading India’s pace attack again. The 29-year-old will be supported by Mohammed Shami and Mohammed Siraj as well. Bumrah stayed out of cricketing action for more than ten months due to his back injury and recently after recovering from it, he made a comeback in ODI cricket almost after a year.

Mohammed Shami was an integral part of India’s fast-bowling unit in the 2019 World Cup, along with Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar. The veteran speedster played only four matches in the competition and grabbed 14 wickets at an economy of 5.48. Against Afghanistan, he appeared for the first time in the playing XI.

While defending the average total of 224 for the team, he picked up a hattrick in the last over of the match to take India home by 11 runs. Against England, he grabbed a fifer in his 10-over spell and delivered his best bowling performance in the competition. Following the match against Bangladesh at Edgbaston, he was dropped from the side.

In the upcoming World Cup edition, the ace pacer will be a key player in the team as his responsibility will be to strengthen the fast-bowling unit with Jasprit Bumrah and <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-players/mohammed-siraj/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Mohammed Siraj</a>. Currently, he is the most experienced pacer in the Indian team as he has been active in ODI cricket since January 2013.

In his maiden World Cup match, he picked up a four-wicket haul and guided India to a six-wicket win. Pairing with Kuldeep Yadav, he delivered some incredible match-winning moments to the side in the marquee tournament. &nbsp;&nbsp;

The right-arm leggie got a chance to play eight ODIs in the competition and scalped 12 wickets at an economy of 5.97. In the recently announced team for the 2023 World Cup, the team management didn’t select Chahal due to his recent average performances. The 33-year-old was part of India’s ODI team that toured the West Indies in July-August 2023 but didn’t get a chance to play any matches.

In 2021, the veteran has played a couple of ODIs in which he got three wickets at an economy of 5.82. Chahal’s exclusion from the World Cup squad miffed Team India supporters as many of them expressed their anger and disappointment through social media platforms.&nbsp;

Kuldeep Yadav provided strength to the team’s spin-bowling unit in the last World Cup. In the majority of matches, the team management showed faith in Kuldeep to support the spin department along with Yuzvendra Chahal. Playing seven games in the competition, the left-arm wrist spinner got six wickets at an economy of 5.02.

In India’s inaugural match against <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-teams/south-africa/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">South Africa</a>, when Yuzvendra Chahal took a four-wicket haul, Kuldeep also contributed an economical spell of 1/46 to the side. Against Pakistan, Team India would’ve found itself in deep trouble if Kuldeep hadn’t removed dangerous Babar Azam and Fakhar Zaman from the crease in the middle of the innings.

Riding on his bowling heroics, India registered an 89-run win (Duckworth-Lewis-Stern method) against the arch-rivals. He will be seen donning India blues again in the upcoming World Cup to serve the team. This time, he will be expected to provide support to Jadeja to reinforce the team’s spin-bowling unit.

Dinesh Karthik was also part of India’s 2019 World Cup team. The veteran batter was included in India’s playing XI in the last two league matches and the semi-final against New Zealand. In the big game against the Kiwis, India were following the total of 240 and the wicketkeeper batter came out to bat at number five.

After the top-order collapse, Karthik was expected to utilise his experience and reconstruct India’s innings. However, he failed to hold his nerves and fell on six after playing 25 deliveries in 29 minutes in the middle. The knockout game against the Black Caps is his last appearance in ODI cricket.

In 2022, the veteran batter served India in the T20 World Cup in <a href="https://www.crictracker.com/cricket-teams/australia/" target="_blank" rel="noopener">Australia</a> but failed to justify his role with the bat. Currently, the 38-year-old cricketer is active in competitive cricket as a commentator. In the Ashes 2023, he was a part of the commentary panel along with illustrious names such as Nasser Hussain, Ricky Ponting, and Kumar Sangakkara.

Jadhav was active in the national side until February 2020. After India’s tour of New Zealand in 2020, the Pune-born player didn’t feature in India colours again. Currently, the 38-year-old is an important member of the Maharashtra team in domestic cricket.

From 2014-2020, Jadhav played 73 ODIs for India and racked up 1389 runs and 27 wickets. In 2023, he returned to IPL after two years. The batting all-rounder was signed by Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) but got a chance to play only two matches in the tournament.
