IPL 2023: Flop XI from third week

The third week of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2023 concluded with a match between Delhi Capitals (DC) and Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. In match 28, the Capitals got their maiden victory in the competition, beating Nitish Rana and Co. by four wickets. In week three, the scenario completely changed as five-time title winners Mumbai Indians (MI), who were struggling at the beginning of the tournament, made a terrific comeback. Beating Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Mumbai, came back on track. On the other side, Kolkata Knight Riders’ (KKR) campaign is in danger as they lost all three games in just one week of the tournament. Witnessing the action in the third week of the league, it could be seen that the non-performances of some players have thrown their teams at the bottom of the points table. In the next few matches, if these players don’t deliver solid numbers to their teams, they might be seen warming the benches in the upcoming weeks. Discussing more, here is the flop XI from week three of the league 1. Prithvi Shaw Prithvi Shaw. (Photo Source: Twitter) Prithvi Shaw’s struggle with the bat continued in the third week of the marquee event as well. While chasing a target of 175 against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Capitals required a fierce start from their openers David Warner and Prithvi Shaw, but the latter failed to turn up against bowlers again. On the fourth delivery of the Capitals’ innings, Anuj Rawat’s superb fielding effort at cover got Shaw dismissed for a duck. Despite witnessing his poor showings, the DC team management didn’t lose faith in the youngster and give him a chance against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). Pursuing a low total of 128 for his team, Shaw had a chance to play a fearless brand of cricket and gain his form, but the right-handed batter again failed to grab the opportunity and went back to the pavilion cheaply, scoring just 13 off 11. This time, Varun Chakravarthy trapped him in the fifth over of the DC innings. 2. Mayank Agarwal Mayank Agarwal (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Mayank Agarwal has failed to be efficient for Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH). Noting his vast IPL experience, the franchise splurged INR 8.25 crore at the IPL 2023 mini-auction to reserve his services as an opener. However, Agarwal’s poor numbers is costing SRH as they are consistently losing games due to his dismal opening batting. The veteran played two games in the third week of the league but couldn’t produce a quality knock in any of those. Against Kolkata Knight Riders, his opening partner Harry Brook rocked the match with his fabulous maiden century, while on the other side, Agarwal fell to Andre Russell on a paltry nine off 13. In the big match against Mumbai Indians (MI), Sunrisers got a target of 193, and Agarwal’s responsibility was to show an intrepid spirit and provide an aggressive start to his team. Instead of doing that, he looked defensive and produced a sluggish knock of 48 off 41. In the end, MI took the game home by 14 runs, and Agarwal faced criticism for his slow innings. 3. Mitchell Marsh Mitchell Marsh. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Mitchell Marsh exuded confidence with his bat in the One-Day International series against India. Scoring 194 runs with two fifties in three matches at an impeccable strike rate of 131.08, he became the leading run-getter in the series. Noting these batting numbers, Delhi Capitals (DC) fans kept their expectations high of him for the IPL 2023. In their fifth match, DC were desperately looking for a win at M Chinnaswamy Stadium against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB). Winning the toss, DC skipper David Warner chose to bowl. Batting first, the hosts posted 174/6 on the board. To pull off the chase, DC required their key batters to show their spunky side. Chasing the target, Prithvi Shaw went back to the pavilion in the first over, and the responsibility was on Mitchell Marsh to support his captain, but the 31-year-old Aussie followed Shaw to the pavilion without scoring any runs. In the next game against KKR, he again left his team in a perilous situation chipping in with only two runs while following a mere 128. 4. Devdutt Padikkal Devdutt Padikkal. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) Rajasthan Royals (RR) are performing extremely well in the tournament. With four victories and three losses, they are second on the points table. Between these positive scenes, Devdutt Padikkal’s horrendous figures are not getting much attention. In the huge game against the defending champions Gujarat Titans (GT), he played as an Impact Player but failed to create any impact on the match for his team. While pursuing a target of 178, RR lost their openers within the first three overs. After the fall of Jos Buttler, Padikkal arrived at the crease; this was a perfect opportunity for him to show his muscle power. In spite of doing that, he looked timid against GT bowlers and played slow innings of 26 off 25. Against Lucknow Super Giants (LSG), he made the matter complicated for Royal again with his 26 off 21. Despite getting a chance in the team in back-to-back games, Padikkal has got unsuccess to be among the runs. 5. Dinesh Karthik Dinesh Karthik. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) Banking on Dinesh Karthik’s experience and ability, Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) trusted him to reinforce their batting unit in the lower middle order. In 2022, he displayed his brilliance with the bat and delivered some incredible match-finishing innings to Challengers. In 2023, Karthik has scored in double digits twice. In the third week, RCB played three games, and in all these contests, Karthik delivered underwhelming batting figures to his team.Against Delhi Capitals (DC), he was dismissed for a duck by Kuldeep Yadav. While against Punjab Kings (PBKS), he went back to the pavilion after piling up only seven runs. Earlier, in the high-scoring contest against Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the wicketkeeper-batter had a chance to take his team home with his match-finishing skills, but he choked under pressure and gave his wicket to Tushar Deshpande. With his dismissal on 28 off 14, RCB’s chances in the game got diminished, and in the end, Super Kings took the game home by eight runs. 6. Riyan Parag Riyan Parag. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) Despite receiving the unwavering support from Rajasthan Royals (RR), Riyan Parag is delivering underwhelming numbers to the team. Playing against the Hardik Pandya-led Gujarat Titans (GT), the RR team management sent him to bat at number five to pursue 178. With the fall of three wickets in quick succession, Parag’s role was to stand and support his captain Sanju Samson, but the right-handed batter played a reckless shot against Rashid Khan and got caught at long-off by David Miller. His string of failures continued in the next contest against Lucknow Super Giants as well. This time, the RR batter faced fierce criticism for his slow unbeaten 15-run off 12 balls. While chasing the low total of 155, he was expected to show maturity and take the team home, but the 21-year-old never looked confident to pull off the chase. 7. Andre Russell Andre Russell. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) So far, Kolkata Knight Riders are one of the worst-performing sides in this year’s IPL, with only two victories in seven matches. One of their oldest stalwarts, Andre Russell, who is known for his all-round talent, has got unsuccess in strengthening the team in both bowling and batting departments. The third week of the IPL 2023 started with a match between KKR and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) at Eden Gardens. In this game, Andre Russell took three wickets with the ball but displayed a below-par show while batting. Chasing a massive 229, the KKR team management wanted him to play his part excellently, but the Caribbean player again threw his wicket cheaply at his score of three. Against Mumbai Indians (MI), he scored a quick 21 off 11 with the bat; however, failed to carry the momentum in the match while bowling with his horrendous figures of 1-0-17-0. In KKR's four-wicket defeat at the hands of Delhi Capitals (DC), Russell piled up 38 runs from 31 deliveries, but his team will want him to be consistent in the upcoming contests. 8. Washington Sundar Washington Sundar SRH. (Photo Source: Twitter/IPL) Washington Sundar is an essential part of Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) squad. His ability to contribute in all departments of the game makes him a valuable player in the team. However, the youngster hasn’t attained success in utilising any of his all-round qualities to help SRH this season. At the iconic Eden Gardens, SRH grabbed a 23-run triumph against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), but Washington couldn’t do wonders as an Impact Player, going wicketless and giving 20 runs in his two-over spell. His non-performance didn’t affect his team, as Sunrisers comfortably emerged victorious in the end. The same didn’t happen in the big clash against Mumbai Indians (MI). Playing against five-time champions, Sundar delivered an economical spell, but his wicket drought didn’t end as he failed to scalp any wickets. While going after 193, Sundar came out to bat at number nine. With 44 required from 20, Sundar was required to deliver fireworks to his team to get away with the match. However, the 23-year-old crumbled under pressure and went back to the pavilion scoring only ten off six. 9. Sunil Narine Sunil Narine. (Photo Source: ILT20) Sunil Narine has bagged many games for Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in his immense IPL career. In Kolkata Knight Riders’ couple of title victories, Narine played a crucial role with his right-arm off-break bowling. Counting on his reputation as an incredible spinner, Knight Riders have always assigned him the role to lead the spin department. After performing fantabulously against Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), Gujarat Titans (GT), and Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), Narine went into the match against Mumbai Indians (MI) with confidence. Defending a total of 185, KKR were expecting him to put up an amazing show with the ball. However, things didn’t go as per the visitors’ plan as MI batters took Narine to the cleaners and plundered 41 runs in his three-over spell. After a bad day against MI, the veteran looked underconfident against Delhi Capitals (DC) as well. This time too, he didn’t get any wickets and went for 36 runs in his four-over spell. 10. Alzarri Joseph Alzarri Joseph. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) In the initial games of IPL 2023, Alzarri Joseph looked aggressive with the ball and helped his team to win matches comfortably. However, the pacer failed to carry the momentum in the third week of the league as he completely lost his rhythm and delivered terrible spells to his team. Against Rajasthan Royals (RR), while defending a total of 177, his costly spell spoiled his team’s chances in the game. In Joseph’s three overs, RR batters looked relentless against him and hit 47 runs. The expensive spell of the West Indies bowler made a huge difference as the Royals picked up the win comfortably in the last over of the match. However, the 26-year-old has been decent thus far in the competition. Noting his only bad day at work, the GT team management might include him in their playing XI in the further games. 11. T Natarajan T Natarajan. (Photo Source: Twitter) T Natarajan is a premier bowler in Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), but this season, he hasn’t been at his best. His indisciplined bowling has become a boon for batters as they are not missing the chance to overpower him. Along with Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umran Malik, and Marco Jansen, his role is to bolster the SRH bowling unit. Looking at his bowling numbers thus far, it could be said that the 32-year-old is falling apart under pressure. In his team’s 23-run win at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) batters dominated him and smashed 54 runs from his four overs. His struggle continued in the next match as Mumbai Indians (MI) batters tamed him and looted 50 runs from his complete four-over spell. These figures also made him the most expensive bowler of the match.
