IPL 2024: Team-wise worst buys in the auction

The IPL 2024 auction concluded with 72 players out of 333 registered getting a buyer amongst the ten franchises that participated. The event was held on December 19, at the Coca-Cola Arena, in Dubai. This was a mini-auction with an eye on the upcoming edition of the tournament next year. Pat Cummins with an INR 20.50 crore bid by Sunrisers Hyderabad and Mitchell Starc with an INR 24.75 crore bid from Kolkata Knight Riders, broke the INR 20 Cr barrier in IPL auction history. Consequently, they became the two most expensive players ever sold. Besides, there were other players as well, who received huge monetary bids, but there was no explanation from franchises as, to why they were bought. In this article, we will have a look at team-wise worst buys in the IPL 2024 auction, players who might not live up to the price tag or the hype in the upcoming IPL edition. Here are the team-wise worst buys in the IPL 2024 auction: 9. Sameer Rizvi (Chennai Super Kings) Sameer-Rizvi. (Photo Source: Twitter) Chennai Super Kings (CSK) has come into the IPL 2024 auction looking for a decent Indian batter to take over from Ambati Rayudu in the playing XI. They had the option to buy the likes of Karun Nair and Manish Pandey, both having extensive experience in domestic and IPL T20s with good techniques. However, the CSK franchise decided to splurge more than INR 8 Cr on Uttar Pradesh’s Sameer Rizvi on the back of some good batting performances in the UP T20 League. Rizvi has been dubbed as a ‘right-handed Suresh Raina’ and even got backing from Raina himself. It remains to be seen how Rizvi performs under the pressure of the money tag and as a replacement for Rayudu. 8. Nuwan Thushara (Mumbai Indians) Nuwan Thushara. (Photo by STR/AFP via Getty Images) Mumbai Indians’ goal in the IPL 2024 auction was to buy the best of the bowlers to enhance their bowling unit. They had released the likes of Chris Jordan, Jofra Archer, Jhye Richardson, Riley Meredith, and Mohd. Arshad Khan. With the influence of their Sri Lankan coaches Mahela Jayawardena and Lasith Malinga, MI went hard for Lankan pacers in the auction. As a result, Dilshan Madushanka was bought for INR 4.6 Cr, which he deserved as he had an excellent ICC World Cup 2023, including a fifer against India. However, Nuwan Thushara got an INR 4.8 Cr bid from MI, which baffled the best of the experts. Despite a slingy action and ability to bowl yorkers, Thushara might not even get a chance to play in the MI's playing XI, and his inexperience on a stage like IPL might become a hindrance to MI’s chances. 7. Kumar Kushagra (Delhi Capitals) Kumar Kushagra (Photo Source: Twitter) Delhi Capitals seemingly had one goal in mind for IPL 2024, buy as many wicketkeepers as they could to back up Rishabh Pant in the next IPL season. They bought Shai Hope, Tristan Stubbs, Ricky Bhui, and Kumar Kushagra in the auction to be backup wicketkeepers in the DC squad. While other keepers bought by DC cost them only their base prices, Kumar Kushagra got an unreal bid. DC paid INR 7.20 Cr for Kushagra, who has played U19 cricket for India. He impressed Sourav Ganguly, the DC director of cricket enough in the trials to warrant such a huge bid from the franchise. He is also a very aggressive batter at the top and perhaps the team management will find a good use for him in the XI. 6. Umesh Yadav (Gujarat Titans) Umesh Yadav against PBKS. Their main objective in the IPL 2024 auction was to replace him and they did that by buying Spencer Johnson and also found Azmatullah Omarzai as a decent replacement for Hardik Pandya. But in a surprise buy, GT paid INR 5.80 Cr for India pacer Umesh Yadav. While Yadav is massively experienced with 136 wickets in 141 IPL games, his economy has been very poor. In the last four IPL seasons, he has a collective of 26 wickets to his name, while in IPL 2023, he picked only one wicket in 8 matches. It remains to be seen where will Yadav fit in GT's playing XI. 5. Yash Dayal (Royal Challengers Bangalore) Yash Dayal. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) splurged huge money on buying the best bowlers possible in the IPL 2024 auction to overcome their consistent bowling issues. As a result, they have a formidable pace bowling lineup of Mohammed Siraj, Reece Topley, Cameron Green, Tom Curran, Lockie Ferguson, and Yash Dayal. However, buying Yash Dayal for INR 5 Cr can be considered to be a contentious choice. The left-arm seamer had a morale-devasting IPL 2023, where he was smashed for five sixes in an over by Rinku Singh and he missed quite a lot of games that edition. Then despite getting a maiden India call-up, Dayal battled injuries and it remains to be seen how he will perform in the unforgiving Chinnaswamy Stadium for RCB. 4. Shubham Dubey (Rajasthan Royals) Shubham Dubey (Photo Source: Twitter) Shubham Dubey received a huge bid of INR 5.8 crores from Rajasthan Royals early on in the IPL 2024 auction. He plays for Vidarbha in domestic cricket and has a strike rate of 145.20 in 20 T20s thus far. An assertive left-handed middle-order batsman, Dubey showcased his talent in the recent Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, boasting an impressive strike rate of 185. It remains to be seen how he fares against some of the best bowlers in the world in the IPL 2024 and he will have the pressure to perform as per the price tag he got in the auction by the RR team. 3. Jaydev Unadkat (Sunrisers Hyderabad) Jaydev Unadkat. (Photo Source: BCCI/IPL) Sunrisers Hyderabad secured the services of Australian skipper Pat Cummins at a staggering cost of Rs 20.5 crore. They broke the INR 20 Cr bid barrier for the first time and also made some impressive purchases in the IPL 2024 auction. However, some of their buys didn’t make sense at all and one of such buys was Jaydev Unadkat. Unadkat was bought for INR 50 lakhs by the SRH team. This is despite the fact they have T Natarajan, another left-arm pacer in their ranks, who is a gun bowler in death overs. Similarly, they also have Fazalhaq Farooqi as well for the same reason. Hence buying Jaydev Unadkat as well, given his poor performances in the last few IPL editions, is head-scratching. 2. Rilee Russouw (Punjab Kings) Rilee Rossouw. (Photo Source: IPL/BCCI) Rilee Russouw might be one of the best T20 batters around the world and he found his second wind with the South African team as well. However, Punjab Kings spending INR 8 Cr on Russouw was a surprising decision in the IPL 2024 auction. They had released Bhanuka Rajapaksa from their squad ahead of the auction and needed a similarly aggressive batter. But there were many other options to choose from as Rossouw’s IPL 2023 was a below-par one. He made 209 runs in 9 games with one fifty only. While his strike rate was 148.25, consistency was his problem as he averaged less than 30 in the tournament. But the Proteas southpaw comes with a serious reputation in T20 cricket and it remains to be seen if he lives up to his price tag. 1. Gus Atkinson (Kolkata Knight Riders) Gus Atkinson. They had released the likes of Tim Southee, Umesh Yadav, Lockie Ferguson, and Shardul Thakur ahead of the auction and wanted some serious firepower. And they got it in Mitchell Starc by paying him INR 24.75 Cr in the auction. They also got Chetan Sakariya, a brilliant death-over bowler, and some backup options in Mujeeb Ur Rahman and Gus Atkinson. However, it remains to be seen how much game time Atkinson will get with Harshit Rana, Sakariya, Vaibhav Arora, Starc, and Andre Russell being the pace options for KKR. The Englishman might use this experience of IPL with the KKR squad to better himself.
