Indian Premier League (IPL) has given opportunities to several youngsters since its emergence. Players such as Rishabh Pant, Umran Malik, Axar Patel, Shreyas Iyer, and Suryakumar Yadav broke into international cricket after performing excellently in the T20 extravaganza.
In the past, some names were also looking to set their careers rolling by virtue of their performances in the T20 tournament. These players did well in their initial seasons and became household names. Noting their superb numbers, ardent league buffs were expecting them to become huge figures in the cash-rich tournament.
However, these players failed to continue their form in the long run and their careers couldn’t thrive as expected.
Discussing more, here are 5 players who dazzled in the T20 league in only one season:
5. Manpreet Gony
In 2008, Manpreet Gony hit headlines for his sensational performance for Chennai Super Kings (CSK). Donning the yellow jersey, the medium pacer took 17 wickets in 16 matches at an economy of 7.38. With these figures, he also ended up as the joint-highest wicket-taker for his team, along with Albie Morkel.
Witnessing these fine numbers of the bowler, selectors gave him a chance to represent the national team in the 2008 Asia Cup. He got a chance to play a couple of matches in the continental competition but the speedster couldn’t impress enough to be picked for the national team again.
After the inaugural IPL edition, his performance plummeted in the marquee T20 tournament. The Punjab-born pacer continued playing for CSK in the second and third IPL editions but this time, he looked out of rhythm.
In 2011, CSK parted ways with him and he next played for Deccan Chargers (DC) but in the new team, he failed to create enough impact with the ball. In 2017, he appeared in the T20 tournament for the last time for Gujarat Lions (GL).
