Pakistan began their World Cup confidently with their two off two wins in the first week. In the first game against the Netherlands in Hyderabad, Pakistan registered an 81-run convincing win but their batting looked shaky. Their top-order batters Fakhar Zaman (12 off 15), Imam-ul-Haq (15 off 19), and Babar Azam (5 off 18) failed to justify their roles in this match. With these three early scalps, Pakistan were three down at a score of 38.

Mohammad Rizwan and Saud Shakeel stepped up and rescued the team from the perilous situation. The wicketkeeper batter scored 68 off 75 and Shakeel also played a swift knock of 68 off 52 with 10 boundaries (nine fours and a maximum). Riding on the quality knocks from both batters, the Green Army scored 286 in 49 overs.

After the comfortable victory against the associate nation, the 1992 champions pulled off their record World Cup chase. While pursuing 345 runs against Sri Lanka, Pakistan lost Imam and captain Babar early but Rizwan and Abdullah Shafique held their nerves and took their side close to the total. Shafique departed after scoring 113 off 103 but it was Rizwan who stayed at the crease until the end and took the team home with his scintillating 131-run innings off 121 balls.
