Tim Southee missed quite a few matches for New Zealand at the start of the World Cup 2023 as he was recovering from a broken right thumb. He played only 4 matches and picked 7 wickets in all. Once the leader of the New Zealand pacer attack, Southee has 221 ODI wickets in 161 games with a best of 7/33.

However, the ICC World Cup 2023 exposed his weaknesses at almost 35 years of age. Southee barely hit the 135 kph mark and didn’t get the swing that he is famous for. He was hammered for 100 runs in the semi-final against India, becoming the first bowler to give 100-plus runs on ODIs, twice. It is time that Southee focuses on Test cricket, where he captains the Kiwis and lets the young generation take over in the white-ball formats.
