3. South Africa were left with 22 off 1 in the Cricket World Cup Semi Final 1992
In the history of Proteas Cricket, the 1992 Cricket World Cup will be remembered for both good and bad. South Africa returned to the World Cup with a stellar performance. They reached the semi-finals and were up against England at SCG.
England batted first and put runs on the board. South Africa were cruising to the target, they needed 22 runs off the remaining 13 balls. Then rain came into play and it spoiled the intense match. At the time play resumed South Africa needed 22 off 1 ball. It was an unprecedented target for the Proteas. Eventually, they ended up losing a well-fought match.
Back then, the method was such that they deduced the runs scored in those most productive overs. Thus two overs of interruption got the target reduced by one only. This controversial end led to a forced change in the law, which was replaced by the D/L method later on.
