SA20 2023: Team-wise one player who will play for their IPL's sister franchise

The inaugural edition of the SA20 League is set to get underway in January next year. The player auction for the tournament took place on Monday (September 19) and Tristan Stubbs ended up as the most expensive player after Sunrisers Eastern Cape acquired his services for Rand 9.2 million. It has to be noted that the six franchises in the SA 20 League are owned by IPL teams namely, MI Cape Town (Reliance), Pretoria Capitals (JSW), Paarl Royals (Royals Sports Group), Durban Super Giants (RPG-Sanjiv Goenka), Johannesburg Super Kings (India Cements), and Sunrisers Eastern Cape (Sunrisers Hyderabad owner Kaviya Maran). This had prompted for the coaches and the team members to go after players from their parent IPL teams. On that note, let us look at one player from each team in SA 20 League 2023 who will play for the same team they had played in IPL 2022. 1. Johannesburg Super Kings – Mahesh Theekshana Sri Lankan spinner Maheesh Theekshana was retained by the Johannesburg Super Kings franchise ahead of the auction. He played for the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2022. The mystery spinner has been quite impressive for various teams around the globe in the T20 format and played a big part in Sri Lanka’s title winning campaign at the Asia Cup 2022. Theekshana has the ability to surprise the batters with his variations and the 22-year-old can hurry the batters with his speed. He is also comfortable with taking the new ball in the powerplay. Theekshana played nine games for the Chennai Super Kings in IPL 2022 where he picked 12 wickets at an excellent economy rate of 7.45. The youngster will be one of the players to watch out for in the league given his brilliant skill set. 2. Durban Super Giants – Quinton de Kock Quinton de Kock is one of the most experienced South African batters and he was retained by the Durban Super Giants ahead of the SA20 Auction. The left-hander was a part of the Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL 2022 season where he had a fantastic season with the bat. De Kock finished with 508 runs in 15 games for the Lucknow Super Giants at an average of 36.29 in IPL 2022, including a mammoth unbeaten 140 in the tournament. The wicketkeeper-batter is aggressive in the powerplay and is very strong on anything on his pads. He is one of the marquee signings in the SA20 League and a lot will be expected from him in the inaugural edition especially after his stint in IPL this year. 3. Sunrisers Eastern Cape – Marco Jansen Marco Jansen has been one of the upcoming seamers in the South African circuit and he was picked up in the auction by the Sunrisers Eastern Cape for Rand 6.1 million. The tall speedster played for the Sunrisers Hyderabad in IPL 2022 and he has reunited with the same team. Jansen has been a great find ever since he came to the Test setup for South Africa and he has troubled the batters with the pace and bounce he gets. The lanky seamer played eight games for the Sunrisers Hyderabad franchise where he picked up nine wickets at an economy of 8.56 in IPL 2022. However, Jansen has got the ability to bowl inswingers, which will be of use in the South African conditions. He is also a handy batter down the order and can hit the long ones at ease. 4. Paarl Royals – Jos Buttler Jos Buttler is one of the best T20 batters going around in the world at the moment and he can win matches on his own with the amount of power he generates. Being a 360-degree player, Buttler is destructive in the powerplay and can decimate the best of bowling attacks. The right-hander was retained by the Paarl Royals ahead of the auction and joined hands with his IPL team Rajasthan Royals. Buttler had a tremendous IPL 2022 season for the Royals and he played a big part in the franchise reaching the finals of the tournament this year. Buttler finished with a massive tally of 863 runs in 17 innings at an average of 57.53 and he scored four centuries and four half-centuries throughout the campaign. A similar kind of performance for his team in the SA20 League will boost the chances of Paarl Royals clinching the title. 5. MI Cape Town – Dewald Brevis Dewald Brevis came through the ranks and ended up as the highest run getter in the Under-19 World Cup this year. Often compared to the mighty AB de Villiers, Brevis had the talent to excel against the best of bowlers and he showed glimpses of his potential in the IPL 2022 for the Mumbai Indians. The right-hander has started to participate in various T20 leagues around the world and no wonder, MI Cape Town has retained his services ahead of the SA20. The youngster has a lot to offer for his side and defenitely a future star in the making. Brevis hit 161 runs in seven innings in his maiden IPL season this year for the Mumbai Indians and he did smack a few out of the ground. The youngster is just 19 years, and he is likely to get better in the Mumbai Indians setup where a lot of players have been groomed over the years. 6. Pretoria Capitals – Anrich Nortje Anrich Nortje was retained by the Pretoria Capitals ahead of the SA20 Auction. He played for the same ownership in IPL 2022, the Delhi Capitals group. The 28-year-old has been a revelation in the last two years for South Africa across formats. Nortje could not have much impact in IPL 2022 as he was hit with injuries and he managed to play just six games in which he picked up nine wickets at an average of 24.11. He is a wicket-taking option and can clock speeds above 150 kmph consistently. Nortje with his raw pace has always been a potent option for the skipper and he can change a game quickly on its head.
