T20 World Cup 2022: 10 prominent IPL stars who will not feature in the tournament

The T20 World Cup brings together some of the biggest names in the cricketing arena. The best players from the top-cricketing nations battle it out for the crown. The forthcoming T20 extravaganza in Australia will witness something similar. However, some of the players who have proven their mettle in the Indian Premier League and are rated highly in the T20 circuit won't feature in the global event in October. Let us look at some of the prominent IPL stars who will not register their presence in the T20 World Cup 2022: 10. Avesh Khan Avesh Khan has been one of the promising fast bowlers in the Indian cricketing circle. He made it to the Indian team on the back of some stellar performances in the IPL over the years. In the 2022 season too, the speedster took 18 wickets in 13 matches at an economy of 8.73, which is decent considering he bowled a lot at the death. Avesh has the ability to bowl at different junctures of the game and has a lot of variations up his sleeve. But the 25-year-old has struggled to create an impact for the Men in Blue. In the 15 T20I games played thus far, he has taken 13 wickets and conceded runs at an alarming rate of 9.10. The Indore-born was battling for the fourth seamer slot with fellow teammate Arshdeep Singh. The left-arm pacer did exceedingly well for Rohit Sharma's side against West Indies and in the recently concluded Asia Cup. It worked wonders in the favour of the Punjab pacer and Avesh did not get a ticket to Australia. 9. Ruturaj Gaikwad Ruturaj Gaikwad has been a consistent performer in the IPL circuit. He was the tournament's highest run scorer in the year 2021. On the back of his stunning performances, the 25-year-old broke into the national team in the shortest format. However, the opening batter failed to impress in the international arena. Gaikwad could only manage 135 runs in nine games at a strike rate of 123.85. Also, the Pune-born put up a mediocre display for his franchise Chennai Super Kings in this year’s Indian Premier League. Gaikwad scored 368 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 126.46. The dashing stroke-maker was not able to do enough at the bigger stages to be in the reckoning for a World Cup spot. 8. Ishan Kishan Ishan Kishan was part of the Indian team in the T20 World Cup 2021 and was in the reckoning for the global tournament in Australia as well. However, his lack of form with the bat resulted in his undoing and thus was unable to break into the squad. Kishan had a middling season in this year’s IPL. Though he did accumulate 418 runs but at a low strike rate of 120.11. The Jharkhand batter showed flashes of brilliance with the bat for the Men in Blue in the number of opportunities he got but with senior pros like KL Rahul and Virat Kohli back in the mix, the youngster's chances were limited. The 24-year-old had a chance to slot in as a backup wicket-keeper. But with Dinesh Karthik being in a rich vein of form and fulfilling the role of a ‘finisher’ with perfection, Kishan’s World Cup hopes could not materialize. 7. Shardul Thakur Shardul Thakur has been a regular figure in the Indian circuit. The bowling allrounder also represented India in the last year’s T20 World Cup and was part of the Men in Blue’s plans this year as well. However, Shardul did not perform as per his standards in the T20 circuit. In IPL 2022, the 30-year-old featured in 14 games for his new franchise Delhi Capitals and took 15 wickets at a high economy of 9.79. The rise of Harshal Patel restricted Shardul’s chances in the shortest format. In the amount of opportunites he had, the Mumbai pacer was not able to make a mark with his performances. As a result, Harshal pipped the 30-year-old in the race to the World Cup. 6. Sanju Samson Sanju Samson has been one of the flamboyant batters in the Indian circuit. The wicket-keeper batter has been a consistent performer be it IPL or domestic cricket but has failed to make it big in the international arena. In the recently culminated IPL, the 27-year-old aggregated 458 runs at a strike rate of 146.79 in 17 matches, and courtesy of which, the swashbuckling cricketer was drafted into the national T20 side. Samson played some fabulous innings and was in the reckoning for a ticket to Australia. With an intense auditioning for the wicket-keeper slot, the Kerala batter was contesting for a backup batter position. Deepak Hooda had a stellar campaign in the IPL and for India as well. He offered flexibility with the bat and was a handy option with the ball. Therefore, the selectors decided to go ahead with Hooda ahead of others including Samson for the T20 extravaganza. 5. Jonny Bairstow Jonny Bairstow has been in the form of his life this year. He was central to England's revival in red-ball cricket and was an important member of the T20 setup. But the ace-batter suffered a lower limb injury and would not take part in the upcoming marquee event. Bairstow suffered the injury as a result of a "freak" golf accident while playing in Leeds. He missed the third Test against South Africa and will not feature in the global event as well. The Yorkshire-born is known for his fearless batting approach and the world saw glimpses of the same in the IPL 2022. In 11 games for the Punjab Kings, Bairstow smashed 253 runs at a strike rate of 144.57. The charismatic cricketer is a game-changer with the bat and his unavailability in the World Cup is a massive blow for the Jos Buttler side. 4. Sunil Narine Sunil Narine is considered a legend in T20 cricket. The 34-year-old is known to bamboozle batters with his numerous variations and is more than handy with the bat. In IPL 2022, the ace-spinner proved quite tough to get away with and took nine wickets at a phenomenal economy of 5.57 across 14 matches. However, Narine would not be part of the West Indies squad for the T20 World Cup. On Narine's unavailability, CWI chief selector Desmond Haynes said “I did not get any notice from Narine regarding his availability to play. There were conversations that the captain (Nicholas Pooran) was having with Narine, and from all reports, it seemed that he was not interested." Narine has been sensational for his national side taking 52 wickets in 51 matches at a jaw-dropping economy rate of 6.01. It is unfortunate that a player of such caliber would not feature in an event as colossal as the T20 World Cup. 3. Faf du Plessis Faf du Plessis is one of the most sought-after players in T20 cricket. He is a run machine at the top of the order and showed his batting might in IPL 2022 as well. The veteran batter accumulated 468 runs at a strike rate of 127.52 for his new franchise, Royal Challengers Bangalore. The former South African skipper retired from Test Cricket last year to focus more on other formats. However, he has not been part of Proteas’ plans ever since. He was not handed a central contract and was overlooked for the last year’s World cup. The 38-year-old has unfortunately suffered a similar fate this time as well. Du Plessis has been a giant of a player in the shortest format and has also delivered match-winning performances for his national side. In the 50 T20Is, the Pretoria born has piled up 1528 runs at a strike rate of 134.38. 2. Andre Russell Andre Russell is arguably among the most destructive batters in the T20 circuit at the moment. The ace allrounder is a match-winner with both bat and ball and has proved his pedigree on the bigger stages. Unfortunately, Russell was not able to make it to the West Indies team for the upcoming global event due to poor form. Chief selector Haynes said “We're still not convinced yet, he's not performing as well as we would like to see him in the competition. I think in the situation with Andre Russell, we've just decided to move on, and look for someone who's in form, and doing well in the T20 format." Russell was in top form in IPL this year. The Jamaica-born amassed 335 runs in 14 matches for Kolkata Knight Riders at a strike rate of 174.48 and even took 17 wickets with the ball. With Russell not going to the World Cup, bowlers around the world will be relieved for sure. 1. Ravindra Jadeja Ravindra Jadeja is among the best allrounders in world cricket across formats. He has been a vital cog in the Men in Blue wheel and brings in the much-needed balance to the side with his all-round prowess. Unfortunately, the veteran allrounder will not feature in the marquee tournament due to a knee injury. The 33-year-old sustained the injury during the Asia Cup 2022 and has been sidelined from the squad ever since. Jadeja has undergone knee surgery and won’t be able to recover in time for World Cup. The reliable allrounder has proved his mettle in the T20 circuit be it IPL or international cricket. Although Jadeja had a poor IPL 2022 where he could only score 116 runs at a strike rate of 118.37, the southpaw played some fabulous knocks for the Men in Blue. His services will be largely missed in the T20 World Cup.
