T20 World Cup 2022: Ranking 5 key bowlers of Bangladesh ahead of Super 12 stage

Bangladesh are heading into the T20 World Cup with a string of lacklustre performances. The Asia Cup 2022 witnessed them crashing out of the group stage, while they could not secure wins in any of their matches in the recent T20I tri-series in New Zealand either. Their batting unit has failed to rack up enough runs, while bowlers have proven to be quite costly. But having been in similar situations in the past, the Bangla Tigers would hope to make a rapid turnaround with their experienced bowling unit and instill confidence in the squad. The spin unit will be led by skipper Shakib Al Hasan, while Mustafizur Rahman will head the pace bowling department. Here are the bowlers, who can be key for Bangladesh in the showpiece event: 5. Mosaddek Hossain Since making his debut, Mosaddek has primarily been used as a batting all-rounder. He has the ability to provide the much-needed flourish to the team, with his ball-striking ability - a glimpse of which everyone saw when he scored 48 runs off 31 balls against Afghanistan in Asia Cup 2022. However, the other side to his career has been his useful bowling and getting wickets in crunch moments. In his maiden ODI against Afghanistan in 2016, the talented off-spinner picked two wickets and returned with figures of 2/30 in ten overs. As far as T20Is are concerned, Mosaddek has scalped 16 wickets in 23 innings, at an efficient economy of 6.93. In fact, he has been a fine performer with the ball across all formats but has not been given enough opportunities. With a variety of off-spin deliveries up his sleeve, arm ball, and tight line length, the 26-year-old will be key to Bangladesh’s plans in the T20 World Cup. 4. Mehidy Hasan Miraz Mehidy has been a quality performer for the Bangla Tigers, especially in the longest format with 135 wickets to his credit. In 64 ODIs, Mehidy has bagged 75 wickets at an economy of 4.57, while keeping a check on the opposition batters. However, Mehidy has only played 18 T20Is and picked up eight wickets at an economy of 8.56. Although, he is yet to do well in this format, he can turn out to be the trump card for Bangladesh in the showpiece event with his wily off-spin. The 24-year-old is likely to be used in the powerplay overs, given his proven expertise to put the balls into areas of uncertainty. Mehidy is known to draw the batters forward with perfect angles, and can be really handy. 3. Taskin Ahmed Taskin Ahmed has good experience of international cricket and the innate ability to hurry batters with express pace. The right-arm pacer made his international debut in 2014 and since then has been a key bowler for Bangladesh across all formats. Although the injury concerns have largely affected his career, the 27-year-old has been fighting it hard to maintain his pace and accuracy. So far, Taskin has bagged 28 wickets in 41 T20Is at an economy of 7.86, and needs to be more consistent in terms of wickets. However, the pacer is heading into the tournament with five wickets in four appearances in the recent T20I tri-series in New Zealand. In the last edition of T20 World Cup, Taskin fetched six scalps in as many appearances at an economy of 6.50. 2. Shakib Al Hasan The prolific all-rounder and skipper of Bangladesh, Shakib Al Hasan has been an inspirational figure in Bangladesh Cricket over the years. Earlier this year, he was chosen as a leader of the team in the shortest format. Shakib’s task seems quite arduous as he is joined by a young team that will miss the services of Mushfiqur Rahim and Tamim Iqbal. Nevertheless, the 35-year-old is coming into this tournament with enough runs under his belt by virtue of his outings in the T20I tri-series in New Zealand. The experienced campaigner has 122 wickets in the shortest format and is also the leading wicket-taker. In the last edition of the T20 World Cup, Shakib emerged as the top wicket-taker for the team with 11 wickets in six games at an economy of 5.59. He would surely look to replicate the same performance to help the team in going deep into the tournament. 1. Mustafizur Rahman Popularly known as ‘Fizz’, Mustafizur Rahman is going to be the most important bowler for the Bangla Tigers in the T20 World Cup 2022. His uncanny ability to pick wickets with variations, slower deliveries and off-cutters are second to none and can work wonders in big grounds of Australia. In 73 T20Is, Mustafizur has 94 wickets under his belt at an economy of 7.79. Although he has managed only eight wickets in 12 T20Is this year, he is expected to turn the tables and be a wrecker-in-chief for the team. In seven games of the T20 World Cup 2021, Mustafizur scalped eight wickets, with best figures of 4/36 against Oman. It will be interesting to see if the 27-year-old manages to break the ceiling with his performances and help Bangladesh prevail on most occasions.
