T20 World Cup 2022: Rating each teams' performance in Super 12

The Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2022 got concluded with India securing a big victory over Zimbabwe and topping the points table. It was an exciting contest between top teams around the world, while some lower-ranked teams caused an upset and will depart from this tournament with confidence under their belt. The four semi-finalist of the show-piece event are India, Pakistan, New Zealand and England. All four teams were brilliant with their executions on the field and deserved a spot in the final four. Here is the rating for all the teams on the basis of their performances in Super 12. 12. Afghanistan – 6/10 The Afghanistan team were involved in two rain-abandoned matches, which already pushed them backwards in terms of qualification to the knockouts. In the end, they could not return with any victories under their belt and finished in the last position of Group 1. Afghanistan started well to put England under pressure, but the latter sealed the game. Their clash against England and Ireland were washed out. Then they featured against Sri Lanka and failed to defend their total of 144 runs. In the final game against Australia, the Mohammad Nabi-led side displayed a spirited effort to restrict Australia to 168 on a belter. In reply, Afghanistan lost wickets in between, but Rashid Khan managed to take the game deep, but they fell short by five runs and ended the game on a losing side. 11. Ireland - 6.5/10 Ireland were average with their performances with a solitary win in five appearances of the showpiece event. The Andy Balbirnie-led side faced Sri Lanka in their first game, and could not defend their total of 128, as the opposition won the game easily. In their next clash, the Irish team was impressive with their batting effort to post 157 on the board. Then, they kept the England batters in check and the incessant rain resulted in them winning the game by five runs. They could not continue their strong showing and lost to Australia and New Zealand by 42 and 35 runs respectively. They finished fifth in the Group 1 points table. 10. Zimbabwe – 6.5/10 The Zimbabwean team displayed a good fight in the Super 12 stage of the T20 World Cup 2022. Although they came last in the Group 2 points table, the position doesn’t reflect the fine performances they delivered in the tournament. In their first outing, the Craig Ervine-led side shared points with South Africa due to a rain-abandoned game. The second fixture was a show stealer for them, as they secured a nerve-wracking victory by 1 run against Pakistan. In the subsequent game against Bangladesh, the Chevrons fell short of only three runs. In their last two clashes, Zimbabwe lost to the Netherlands and India. 9. Sri Lanka – 7/10 The Sri Lankan team had a decent outing in the T20 World Cup 2022 with balanced performances. However, things could have been different, if they had won crunch moments in one or two games. Out of five games, they tasted success in two of them and had four points under their kitty. They started off the Super 12 stage with a clinical victory over Ireland, by chasing the target of 129 with five overs to spare. Then, the Dasun Shanaka-led side endured losses against Australia and New Zealand. Sri Lanka did well to win the game by six wickets against Afghanistan. The final game against the English outfit saw them score 144. They did well with the ball but the opposition managed to win the game in the last over. 8. Bangladesh – 7/10 Bangladesh finished in the fifth position in the Group 2 points table with two victories in five games. One of the key reasons for their loss was due to the reckless batting by the middle order, which evaded them of a good finish. In their first clash against the Dutch team, Bangladesh posted 144 and won by nine runs. However, they were handed a defeat of 104 runs by South Africa in their next game. Then, the Tigers kept their nerves to win by three runs against Zimbabwe. The Shakib Al Hasan-led side produced a good fight against India and fell short by just five runs. In their last game, they could not defend their total of 127 against Pakistan. 7. South Africa - 7/10 South Africa again choked in the ICC events, wherein they could secure two victories, while one ended as a washout in five games. They shared points in the Zimbabwe game and then secured confidence-boosting victories against Bangladesh and India. However, they locked horns with Pakistan in their fourth match of the Super 12 stage, wherein they faced a loss by 33 runs. The Temba Bavuma-led side could not chase down the target of 142 in 14 overs, as the batting unit fell like a pack of cards. Then, their last league match against the Netherlands turned into a must-win for them. The Dutch team posted a total of 158, which was around a par score. In response, the Proteas could score 145 and lost by 13 runs and bowed out of the tournament. 6. Netherlands – 7.5/10 Although the Netherlands failed to have an optimum impact on the T20 World Cup, they finished it quite well thus ending on a positive note. In five games, they could taste success in two of them and finished in the fourth position in the table. In their first game, they fell short by just nine runs against Bangladesh, and then lost by 56 runs to India. The third fixture witnessed them dominated by Pakistan, but they followed it up with a good victory against Zimbabwe. In the final clash against South Africa, the Scott Edwards-led side caused a huge upset to stun South Africa and win by 13 runs. The win resulted in the Proteas losing the chance to feature in the semi-finals of the showpiece event. 5. Australia – 8/10 Australia came into this tournament with the tag of defending champions and were expected to replicate the same performances. But, the Aaron Finch-led side could not be potent enough to seal the top-four spot. The hosts faced New Zealand in their first clash and conceded a score of 200. In reply, they were dismissed for 111 and lost by 89 runs. The huge margin of loss resulted in their dismal net run rate. Then they secured victories over Sri Lanka and Ireland, but the clash against England was a washout. These results needed them to register a big victory over Afghanistan to get ahead of England. However, they won by only four runs and could not qualify for the semi-finals. 4. England- 8.5/10 The English team were one of the most anticipated teams due to the power-packed batting department. Although they have got enough support from the middle-order, the openers Jos Buttler and Alex Hales, along with the bowlers helped them to reach the semi-finals with three wins. In their first game against Afghanistan, the Buttler-led side won by five wickets in a chase of 113. But, they endured a shocking loss against Ireland, and then the crucial Australia game was a washout. They produced a terrific turnaround to beat New Zealand by 20 runs. Then, they got past the challenge of Sri Lanka by chasing the target of 142 successfully and secured a semi-final spot. 3. New Zealand – 8/10 The New Zealand team started on a dominating note, lost in the middle but ended well, which helped them to reach the semi-finals. They finished at the top of the points table with three wins in five matches. In their first game, they posted 200 and won the game by 89 runs, which already put them as favourites for the knockouts. Then, they followed it up by securing a 65-run victory over Sri Lanka. However, they lost by 20 runs to England, in their failed attempt to chase the target of 180. In a must-win game against Ireland, the Kiwi team sealed the win by 35 runs. 2. Pakistan- 8.5/10 As they say, cricket is a funny game, Pakistan managed to qualify for the semi-finals after losing their first two matches of the tournament. With three successive wins, they ended the Super 12 stage on the second spot. In their first game against India, they could not defend their total of 159, and then Zimbabwe caused an upset to beat them by one run. But, they had a major turnaround to beat South Africa after being 5 down for not many runs on the board and overcame the Netherlands in a clinical fashion. In the final game, the Babar Azam-led side did well to restrict Bangladesh to a score of 127. Then they started slow, and managed to win the game easily and entered the semi-finals. 1. India- 9/10 Arguably the best team in the Super 12 stage was the Indian team, with their impressive all-round performances. They tasted success on four out of five occasions and topped the Group 2 points table. In the first fixture against Pakistan, Virat Kohli produced a scintillating knock to start the campaign for India on a positive note. Then, the Rohit Sharma-led side beat the Netherlands by 56 runs and followed it with a close loss against the Proteas. In the fourth game, the Men in Blue won by five runs against Bangladesh. The final game of the tournament witnessed them winning by 71 runs against Zimbabwe.
