Top 5 upsets that no one saw coming in World Cup
In the 48 years of the World Cup, some biggest upsets have happened that left cricket fans in shock.
1. India vs Bangladesh in 2007
During the 2007 World Cup, when Ireland pummelled Pakistan by three wickets in Jamaica, Bangladesh also etched their name in the history books as they defeated India quite convincingly by five wickets on the same day, at the Queen's Park Oval, in Port of Spain, and shocked the cricketing fraternity. Prior to the match, no one had imagined that the star-studded Indian team could get a hammering from the neighbours.
However, when the game happened the Bangla Tigers looked exceptional in all departments of the game and shot down the heavyweights. Batting first after winning the toss, India got folded on a mere 191. Mashrafe Mortaza spearheaded Bangladesh’s pace-bowling unit and came heavily on the Indian batters. The speedster picked a four-wicket haul (4/38) and became the leading wicket-taker in the match.
Mohammad Rafique and Abdur Razzak also bolstered their team’s bowling attack, picking up three wickets apiece. Following the low total, the Bangla Tigers lost opener Shahriar Nafees in the fifth over of the innings but youngsters Tamim Iqbal and Mushfiqur Rahim held their nerves and scored half-centuries.
From the lower order, Shakib-Al-Hasan also played 53-run innings which helped the team to go closer to the total. Rahim hit the winning shot against Munaf Patel and won the game for his side. The wicketkeeper ended up as the highest run-scorer for his team with an unbeaten 56-run score. Mortaza was given the Player of the Match award for his exceptional bowling.
