India has come a long way since it hosted its first Test, back in December, 1933. The Bombay Gymkhana in Mumbai (then Bombay) played host to the red-ball game between India and England. Douglas Jardine was the skipper of the touring side with CK Nayudu leading the hosts.
Despite England winning convincingly by nine wickets, it well and truly laid the robust foundation of Test cricket in India. Since then, India have won 53 Test series at home and have asserted themselves as a dominant force in the sport.
Despite the proliferation of cricketing venues across the vast expanse of India in the recent past, certain ones continue to remain more celebrated than the others for the storied legacy they withhold when it comes to the purest format of cricket.
Here are the list of top Indian venues with most Test matches:
5. M.Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru
The M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru might be known more for its compact dimensions and optimal batting conditions to the younger generation, but in fact, the venue ranks fifth in the list with 24 games played. Nine out of the 24 have ended in draws. The docile track hardly offers any purchase for the bowlers, which is one of the main reasons for quite a lot of draws to have taken place at this venue.
Other than the second Test of the series against Australia, which saw local lad KL Rahul emerge as the Player of the Match for knocks of 90 and 51, all three wins of India where they have succeeded in bowling out the opposition in the fourth innings have been over 100 runs.
