WPL 2024: 5 big guns who went unsold at auction

The 2024 Women’s Premier League (WPL) auction was held in Mumbai on December 19 and all five franchises spent a total of INR 12.75 crore to rebuild their teams for the 2024 tournament. Gujarat Giants (GG) splurged INR 3.50 crore to sign up 10 players and became the biggest buyer at the event. Australia’s all-rounder Annabel Sutherland and India’s uncapped player Kashvee Gautam got picked up for INR 2 crore by Delhi Capitals (DC) and Gujarat Giants (GG) respectively as the most expensive purchases in the auction. On one hand, a few players hit the headlines for pulling off lucrative contracts while some illustrious names failed to attract any bids at the event. Here are five big guns who went unsold at the 2024 WPL auction: 5. West Indies - Deandra Dottin The West Indies all-rounder Deandra Dottin registered her name in the auction at the maximum base price of INR 50 lakh. She was expected to fare well at the event as she has played plenty of international cricket for the West Indies. With 2697 runs and 62 wickets in 127 Women’s T20 Internationals (WT20Is), she is the second-leading run-getter for the Windies side in cricket’s shortest format. Dottin has played a lot of league cricket as well. In the 2023 Caribbean Premier League (CPL), the veteran scored 107 runs in three matches at a strike rate of 117.58 and ended up as the leading run-getter for Trinbago Knight Riders (TKR). Back in the 2023 WPL auction, the Giants signed her up for 60 lakh but the team management that she pulled out of the tournament due to a medical situation. However, Dottin released a statement that she is fit to play in the competition. Following this controversy, GG parted ways with her before the 2024 auction. 4. Sri Lanka - Chamari Athapaththu Sri Lanka’s Chamari Athapaththu has gone unsold in the WPL auctions for consecutive two years. This time, she broke into the auction at a base price INR 50 lakh but no franchise showed interest in her. The Sri Lanka veteran looked magnificent with her bat in the recently played 2023-24 Women’s Big Bash League. Appearing for Sydney Thunder, she hit 552 runs with five half-centuries in 15 matches and ended up as the second-highest run-scorer in the tournament. Noting her performance, cricket analysts were expecting her to bag a massive amount in the 2024 WPL auction. Charlotte Edwards, Mumbai Indians (MI) coach, also expressed surprise at the franchises’ decision not to pick up the Sri Lanka stalwart. Athapathu has performed exceptionally with the bat in the last one and a half years and a lot of cricketing pundits feel she deserved to get picked up in this auction. 3. England - Tammy Beaumont Tammy Beaumont also went under the hammer in the 2024 WPL auction but found no takers. The 32-year-old registered in the auction at a base price of INR 30 lakh but no franchise raise the paddle when her name was announced. This year, the England player looked fine with her bat in the 2023 Hundred Women’s Competition. Playing for Welsh Fire, she smashed 290 runs in eight matches at a remarkable strike rate of 153.43. The England veteran looked decent with her bat in the 2023-24 WBBL as well. Wearing Melbourne Renegades’ jersey, she accumulated 296 runs in 14 matches at a strike rate of 119.35. However, these numbers could not impress the franchises and she went unsold in WPL auctions two times in a row. 2. Australia - Kim Garth Australia’s right-arm pacer Kim Garth also went unsold in the 2024 WPL auction after getting released from GG in November. The 27-year-old’s release was shocking as the she was Giants leading wicket-taker in 2023, with 11 scalps in seven matches at an economy of 7.72 Recently, Garth did a decent job for the Melbourne Stars in the 2023-24 WBBL. She scalped nine wickets in 14 matches at an economy of 5.96. However, her satisfactory performance could not convince the franchises to believe in her for 2024. 1. India - Devika Vaidya UP Warriorz had parted ways with the all-rounder Devika Vaidya in November after witnessing her underwhelming performance in the 2023 WPL. In the previous season, she played seven games and scored only 77 runs at a poor average of 12.83. With the ball, she got only one wicket in three innings. The India stalwart also enrolled her name to get a new team in the 2024 auction at a base price of INR 30 lakh. Her name was announced in the first round but the franchises ignored her along with another India player Sabbhineni Meghana.
