WPL 2024: 5 players who justified their price tags

The second edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2024 has finally come to a fitting conclusion with the Royal Challengers Bangalore taking home the coveted trophy. It was yet another glorious season of the Women’s Premier League which saw thrillers in almost every other match. Fans were left biting their nails as the teams were battling it out on the field for every point. The teams had gambled on the players by splashing the cash during the 2024 WPL Auction. Some of the players were able to live up to the hype generated and for the amount they went for during the auction. Let’s take a look at five players who were able to live up to their price tag during the Women’s Premier League 2024. Here are the five players who justified their price tags in WPL 2024: 5. Poonam Khemnar Poonam Khemnar. (Photo Source: WPL) The all-rounder played for the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the opening edition of the Women’s Premier League 2024. However, she did not have a fruitful season as she was only able to play one match and did not contribute much. She was later released by the franchise ahead of the new season of the Women’s Premier League. UP Warriorz saw this as the perfect opportunity to snap the Indian all-rounder at a base price of INR 10 Lakh. It proved to be worth the money as she was able to build the innings for the franchise and score the runs for the side when required the most. With the bat, she was able to amass 99 runs in 8 innings with her best coming against Gujarat Giants as she scored 36 runs. 4. Shabnim Ismail Shabnim Ismail (Photo Source -twitter/X) The South African fast bowler had a stellar 2023 season which saw her take wickets consistently for her national team. She was not able to leave her mark during her stint with the UP Warriorz in the maiden edition of the WPL 2024. The bowler was only able to take 3 wickets in the 3 matches that she started. Ismail was released from the squad and then picked up for a hefty price of INR 1.2 Crores by the Mumbai Indians. She turned out to be a great asset for the side as she picked up 8 wickets in the 7 matches she played and bowled at a great economy of just over 6. The pacer was lethal with her line and length during the powerplay and was able to trouble the batters more often than not. 3. Sajeevan Sajana Sajeevan Sajana. (Photo Source: X(Twitter) The all-rounder was purchased for a bargain price of INR 10 Lakh during the Women’s Premier League 2024 auction. She seemed to be the perfect player for the Mumbai Indians as she made her mark in the opening game of the tournament by hitting a six off the final ball against Delhi Capitals to seal the win. This was the crowning moment for her as she won the franchise the game during her debut. Sajana was the handy all-rounder that the Mumbai Indians desired and was thought to be the power-hitter for the side at the end. In the limited opportunities she got this season, she was able to make the most of her. With her batting, she was able to smash at a great strike rate of 159 and was able to score 87 runs from her nine matches this season. 2. Sophie Molineux Sophie M (Photo Source -Twitter/X) The all-rounder was snapped up by the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the Women’s Premier League 2024 auction for INR 30 Lakh. The spin bowler was able to deceive the batters with her epic line and lengths. She was a key player for the Royal Challenger Bangalore’s run to their maiden WPL title this season. The slow left-arm orthodox spinner was able to scalp 12 wickets for the team this season. But Sophie M's best performance came against the Delhi Capitals in the final where she scalped three wickets and gave away just 20 runs. The all-rounder’s best batting performance also came against Delhi Capitals where she scored a vital 33 runs. 1. Georgia Wareham Georgia Wareham (Photo Source -Twitter/X) The bowling all-rounder was one of the key cogs in the Royal Challengers Bangalore line-up. She was able to scalp 8 wickets across 12 matches and was also a great contributor with the ball for the franchise. Her performances throughout all the games were crucial as the Royal Challengers Bangalore clinched their maiden WPL title against Delhi Capitals in the final. Georgia Wareham was purchased by the Gujarat Giants in the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League for INR 40 Lakh. But was later released by the franchise ahead of the second season. This prompted the Royal Challengers Bangalore to bid for her and have her for the season. She proved to be a worthy signing for INR 40 Lakh as she scored a valuable 141 runs as well.
