WPL 2024: Ranking Performance of the most expensive buy of each team after the league

Yet another enthralling season of the Women’s Premier League has reached its conclusion as the tournament saw a new winner in the form of Royal Challengers Bangalore. The final saw the Bangalore-based franchise take home the title with an emphatic victory over the Delhi Capitals as they sealed the win with eight wickets in hand. Before the season began, the teams had splashed the cash on players hoping that their investments would be beneficial for the franchise throughout the season. Some records were broken in the auction but were these players able to live upto their price tags this season. Let’s take a look at the performances of each franchise’s costliest purchase this season. Here are the most expensive buys of each team after the league: 5. Ekta Bisht (Royal Challengers Bangalore) Ekta Bisht (Photo Source: Twitter) Royal Challengers Bangalore didn’t tinker much with their squad despite not being able to qualify for the playoffs during the previous season. That move certainly paved the way for the franchise as they ended up lifting the title during the second edition of the Women’s Premier League. But they did make some strange decisions in the auction which was held in the lead up to the tournament. The Royal Challengers Bangalore purchased Ekta Bisht for INR 60 Lakh ahead of the second season. The veteran bowler was not part of the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League but was in great knick leading into the competition. But her performances could not help the franchise at all since she could only manage to play two games and did not claim any wickets at all. Therefore, at that price it might have been a failed buy for the Royal Challengers Bangalore and the 37-year-old might not be retained for the third edition. 4. Shabnim Ismail (Mumbai Indians) Shabnim Ismail (Photo Source -twitter/X) The South African pacer was one of the most talked about players coming into the tournament. Her performances in international cricket have been scintillating and nothing short of spectacular to say the least. A lot of hype was generated when she was released by the UP Warriorz ahead of the Women’s Premier League Auction 2024. Mumbai Indians did not blink an eye while signing her for a whopping price of INR 1.20 Crores during the auction. She was one of the players who lived upto her price tag as she ended up amongst the top bowlers of the tournament. The pacer was able to scalp eight wickets and at an economy of just over six. 3. Vrinda Dinesh (UP Warriorz) Vrindha Dinesh (Photo Source: Twitter) One of the two uncapped Indian players who rocked the Women’s Premier League 2024 Auction was Vrinda Dinesh. There was some hype around her name prior to the Auctions but the amount she actually went for might have caught many people off-guard. Royal Challengers Bangalore and UP Warriorz were in a serious bidding war and the latter got her services for a stunning INR 1.30 Crores. But the big money signing could not deliver for the side as she could only muster 18 runs across the three matches she played in the tournament. The batter was later ruled out of the tournament due to an injury and this is how her maiden WPL campaign ended as well. If the team management backs her for the long-run, she might be retained by the side for the next edition. 2. Annabel Sutherland (Delhi Capitals) Annabel Sutherland. (Photo Source: X(Twitter) A lot of hype was there before the auction for Annabel Sutherland as she was going to be the biggest buy of the season. She had a blistering WBBL 2023 season as she had scored 288 runs and took 28 wickets for her side. Delhi Capitals broke the bank for the bowling all-rounder as they purchased her for a staggering INR 2 Crores. The all-rounder, however was not able to replicate her performances for the Delhi Capitals as she only managed to play four games for the franchise. The 22-year-old could only take four wickets and score just 27 runs. It would take a lot for Sutherland to prove to the team management that she should be retained after such a disastrous campaign. 1. Kashvee Gautam (Gujarat Giants) Kashvee Gautam (Photo Source: Twitter) There was not much hype around Kashvee Gautam prior to the Women’s Premier League 2024 auction. But when her name did pop up during the auction, all teams wanted to have her in the squad. She was amongst the best bowlers in the Women’s Senior T20 Trophy as she was able to scalp 12 wickets in seven matches with an economy of just over 4. This prompted the Gujarat Giants to splash the cash on the uncapped Indian bowler who can contribute with the bat as well. However, she was ruled out of the tournament just a couple of weeks before the start. Owing to an injury, Gujarat Giants had to announce her replacement prior to the commencement of the tournament. Despite no showing during WPL 2024, it is likely that she might be retained for the third edition.
