Anil Jaisinghani, a close friend of underworld don Dawood Ibrahim, has fled India. He is the kingpin of the 2015 Indian Premier League 800 crore betting racket. He was given police protection by Mumbai Police and the same was greeted with severe backlash. Thereafter, the Maharashtra Government decided to withdraw it and ordered a probe to ascertain how the same was provided to him.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis updated about the same. In the meantime, it was learned that Jaisinghani absconded with the knowledge of police officials. He was in constant communication with top cops in Gujarat, Assam, Goa, Maharashtra and Madhya Pradesh as per reports in International Business Times. Back in 2015, the Enforcement Directorate conducted a series of raids against him.

Moreover, his bank accounts were frozen and a non-bailable warrant was issued against the accused by a special session judge of Ahmedabad on May 30, 2015. He has also been arrested thrice under the Gambling and Telegraph act and was also under the radar of the Anti-Corruption and Security Unit of the  International Cricket Council (ICC).

Jaisinghani- not the first one

The ED kept a close eye on his close dealings with another bookie Mukesh Sharma. Back then, Jaisinghani repeatedly claimed that he was a punter and not a bookie. He isn’t the first person associated with cricket-betting who has fled the country. Vijay Mallya, the erstwhile owner of the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, also escaped back in March 2016.

He stepped down from the franchise in 2016 and Siddarth Mallya, his son, ran it for a few months. He was unable to repay the debts of Rs 9,000 crores to several banks and is currently in London. Recently, he also expressed his desire to meet Virat Kohli and the Indian team during the opening Test of India’s Test series against England, however, the Indian government denied him.
