Cricket fraternity congratulate Roger Federer for his 8th Wimbledon win
A thoroughly convincing 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 win made Federer the oldest player to have won the Wimbledon title.
Legendary tennis player Roger Federer hit the record books yet again with his 8th Wimbledon win at London recently. He beat Marin Cilic in the finals of the coveted event of the Tennis calendar. A thoroughly convincing 6-3, 6-1, 6-4 win made Federer the oldest player to have won the Wimbledon title. Roger Federer, who turns 36 in a few days time, won the title at the age of 35.
The previous oldest champion was Arthur Ashe, who had won the title at the age of 32 in the year 1976. Things have not been the best for Roger in the recent times. Close to five years ago, Federer was the undisputed leader in the world of tennis. However, with the age cap catching up, combined with the emergence of younger players like Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic, saw ‘Fedex’ miss out on several championships in the final stages.
But the veteran player lost no hope and kept hitting his straps right. He skipped the French Open this year to ensure that his preparations for his favorite tournament – the Wimbledon – stays in top priority. Now, he had won his 19th Grand Slam title and thoroughly outplayed his opponent in the finals. The finals was his 11th Wimbledon final, the 29th final at the major events.
During the course of the game, such authoritative was Roger Federer that his opponent Marin Cilic broke down to tears midway through the second set. Federer won his first Wimbledon title in 2003 and ruled the event in successive years till 2007. His previous Wimbledon win was in the year 2012.
Now, he registered his 8th Wimbledon title. The congratulatory messages have come in flooding from all corners. The cricket fraternity is not left behind either. Federer is known to share great camaraderie with cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar.
