5. Umpiring howlers that shocked the cricketing world
Umpiring howlers were becoming a cause of concern and to eradicate them, the Decision Review System has been in play for a long time now. But if ever the quality of umpiring can be quantified, Bangladeshi umpire Tanvir Ahmed‘s two horrendous decisions during the Tigers T20I series against Windies would earn a negative score.
In the second T20I between Windies and Bangladesh, Evin Lewis was deceived by a slower delivery and the ball hit his bat’s bottom edge before swirling away from the pitch. Much to the audience’s surprise, he was termed LBW, a decision which infuriated the batsman. DRS saved his day, but what followed later in the 3rd T20I was utterly disastrous.
Oshane Thomas’s final ball of the fourth over was adjudged no-ball during Bangladesh’s run chase. When the replays suggested Thomas’ foot was well behind the line, skipper Carlos Brathwaite protested profusely and the game was halted for a good 15 minutes.
After much contemplation, the match referee Jeff Crowe came down and explained to Brathwaite that the decision cannot be overturned as per the laws and will go down under umpiring mistakes. The Windies skipper did a brilliant job to rally his troops and get over the incident and eventually, they managed to win the game convincingly.
