The Shubman Gill-led side meanwhile defeated five-time champions Mumbai Indians in their last match and will be confident of their chances. However, there is still much room for improvement for the franchise.
The likes of Mohit Sharma and Rashid Khan took care of the bowling department in their opening match but it’s the batting that the side needs to improve. Gill and Wriddhiman Saha gave a decent start and Sai Sudharsan accelerated well but after a point, they struggled to get going. Their middle order struggled and that is one area that the team needs to address immediately.
Chennai, on the other hand, did very well under new captain Ruturaj Gaikwad. Bangladesh international Mustafizur Rahman was splendid with the new ball as he picked up four wickets, while Ravindra Jadeja proved to be economical on a surface that helped the batters. When it came to batting, Rachin Ravindra gave a flying start to the franchise. The New Zealand international made 37 runs off 15 deliveries, while Shivam Dube and Jadeja played to their merit to get the job done on their home turf.
Meanwhile, Gujarat are currently leading 3-2 in the head-to-head battle but last year, in the final of the IPL, Chennai had the last laugh - something that Gujarat will keep in mind and will aim to take their revenge.
