After beating Pakistan by a massive margin of 228 runs, India continued their Asia Cup 2023 campaign as they faced Sri Lanka on Tuesday, September 12 at R.Premadasa Stadium, Colombo. India captain Rohit Sharma won the toss and elected to bat first. Openers, Sharma and Shubman Gill once again got their team off to a good start as they added 80 runs off 67 balls for the first wicket.

However, things took a wild turn as Sri Lanka skipper Dasun Shanaka brought left-arm spinner Dunith Wellalage into the attack. The 20-year-old got into action straight away as he dismissed Shubman Gill (19 off 25) with a peach of a delivery on his very first ball. Gill tried to play with the angle, however, it turned sharply to destroy his off stump.

Virat Kohli, walked in number three fresh from a scintillating hundred against Pakistan the previous day. However, he also fell prey to Wellalage in his next over as he chipped one ball straight to mid-wicket. Kohli departed for 3 off 12 leaving India on 90/2. Indian captain Rohit Sharma, who was batting well at the other end on 53*, also lost his stumps against the young spinner leaving India in all sorts of trouble at 91/3.

Rohit became the second fastest player to reach the landmark (241 innings) after his teammate Virat Kohli who achieved the milestone in just 205 innings.

The Indian captain became the sixth Indian batter to breach the 10,000-run mark and the 15th overall player. He further has the third-best average (48.93) among players with more than 10k runs after MS Dhoni (50.57) and Virat Kohli (57.38).
