AUS vs PAK: Flamboyant Warner kicks off swansong Test series with scintillating century
Australia won the toss and elected to bat first in Perth
David Warner is walking into the sunset of his Test career, and if fitness permits, the third Test against Pakistan will be his final goodbye to the whites. On Day 1 of the first Test in Perth, Warner scored a stunning century, showcasing his brilliance against a depleted Pakistani bowling attack.
This century marked a stylish and memorable performance as he bids farewell to the longest format. With just two more Tests remaining in his illustrious career, Warner's flamboyant display in Perth added another glorious chapter to his cricketing journey.
The 37-year-old marked his first Test century of 2023, clinching his 26th overall and matching the esteemed Sir Gary Sobers on the revered all-time list of Test centurions. Amidst mounting pressure due to his waning Test form, the dynamic opener showcased his mettle, supported by the team management and the discerning selection committee, spearheaded by George Bailey, securing his spot in the XI for the inaugural Test of the home summer.
Warner’s ruthless onslaught devoid Pakistan bowlers any breathing space
After Pat Cummins opted to bat after winning the toss, Warner unleashed a barrage of aggressive strokes on the conducive Perth pitch. His charged-up demeanour was palpable, evident in his assertive running between the wickets alongside Usman Khawaja. Exploiting the inexperience of Pakistan's pace bowling unit, he capitalized on loose deliveries, making Shaheen Shah Afridi leak 12 runs in the opening over, setting the tone for Australia's aggressive start.
The southpaw's stellar performance saw him blasting 14 boundaries and a six en route to his first Test hundred in over a year. Criticised for his declining Test stats, Warner had only notched three Test hundreds in the past four years, making this century all the more crucial for him.
As for Pakistan, their bowling arsenal lacked pace Pakistan, debutant Khurram Shahzad showcased promise, while Aamer Jamal, in his maiden Test spell, displayed enthusiasm but tried too many variations.
