BCCI struggling to get high profile names for selection committee despite Rs. 1.25 crore payout: Reports
BCCI invited applications for forming a new committee but the old team continues to be in charge since then
The BCCI has been accepting applications for the position of national selectors for its senior men's cricket team for well over a month, yet the outgoing panel is still in charge. According to reports, the board is having trouble inviting "high-profile names," and thus another extension has been provided to the previous committee.
The Chetan Sharma-led committee selected India’s squad for the upcoming Sri Lanka series. Though every selector was deployed at a different location due to the ongoing Ranji Trophy tour, it is said that they met over a video call. A payout of Rs 1.25 crore for the chairman's position and Rs 1 crore for the other members is supposedly no longer deemed to be enticing enough.
As per a report by News18, the Cricket Advisory Committee (CAC), which consists of Ashok Malhotra, Sulakshana Naik, and Jatin Paranjpe, will gather in Mumbai on December 29 to interview the selected applicants before unveiling the new selection committee.
“If all goes well, on December 29, the CAC is supposed to meet physically in Mumbai and interview the shortlisted names,” a BCCI source in the know of the developments was quoted as saying.
It also implies that Chetan Sharma, the former committee's chairman, may continue in that position or run again as a representative, along with Harvinder Singh, another candidate from the central zone.
“Chetan has a good chance of either being retained as the chairman or at least the North Zone representative if he is willing to work under new chairman, whosoever it is. The truth is BCCI is not getting any top names. It is not that they haven’t sounded out anyone. If Chetan didn’t have a chance, why would he apply? There must have been some assurances given,” the source added.
Since BCCI invited applications for the selection committee, the former committee took charge of announcing the teams for the New Zealand tour, the Bangladesh tour and now the upcoming home series against Sri Lanka.
