England skipper Ben Stokes has opened up about a funny conversation with his wife after informing her about the retirement of Stuart Broad. The veteran pacer announced his retirement on Day 3 of the fifth and final Ashes 2023 Test at The Oval in London. Notably, the hosts outplayed Pat Cummins and Co. by 49 runs on Day 5 of the fifth Test to draw the series 2-2.

During the post-match press conference, Stokes revealed his wife's response when he informed her of Broad's decision to retire from Test format. The 32-year-old said that it was Broad who used to her that Stokes returned home safely after night outs, which is one of the many reasons he will miss one of his best teammates.

"You know he announced his retirement and I told my wife that this was going to be his last game and she was like, 'Oh, Broady is the one who messages me saying that Ben's got home safe after a good night out'. So she doesn't have that anymore, So it's going to be someone else," Stokes said.

Broad completed a fairytale ending to his Test career by taking the final two wickets in the fifth match to close the Ashes 2023 series. The experienced pacer's spectacular late surge on the fifth day secured England's victory and denied Australia a remarkable series triumph. Notably, if Australia had won the fifth Test, it would have been their first Ashes victory on English soil since 2001.

Broad's career was studded with numerous achievements. The 37-year-old ended his career with a tally of 604 Test wickets from 167 matches at an average of 27.68 and an economy rate of 2.97. He joined the elite list of bowlers to achieve this milestone during the 2023 Ashes series, becoming only the second pacer after his teammate Jimmy Anderson to do so.
