BPL 2023: Tamim Iqbal to be rested for remainder of tournament
With the aim to have Tamim fit for the upcoming England series, he has been rested.
ODI skipper Tamim Iqbal has faced quite a few injury concerns recently, and the Bangladesh Cricket Board doesn't want to risk his fitness for the international games. As a result, he is set to be rested for the remainder of the Bangladesh Premier League.
Alongside being the team's skipper, he is also a key batter and losing him during the crucial months of World Cup preparation would be a big loss for the side. England is set to tour Bangladesh next month and the Board wants their skipper to be well rested and fit for that series.
"Tamim has a problem. He had a back strain problem and due to that he went to Bangkok and took injection but he still suffered (back pain). Our team physio and national physio Julian came to me and spoke today, and because there is England series, it is a big concern for us. That is the reason we are thinking of giving him a break, because if he plays, then it might get worse (injury)," Khaled Mahmud, the coach of Khulna Tigers was quoted as saying by Cricbuzz.
After all country comes first: Mahmud
England is set to tour Bangladesh for three ODIs and three T20Is starting March 1, 2023. Tamim is the captain of the ODI side and the England series is a chance to assess the squad and see how they prepare for the upcoming ODI World Cup in India in October. The coach also spoke about how this would affect the team and the franchise as he added:
"It's a (tough) call for the franchise as they pay him, but after all country comes first and franchises will understand it. It would have been different if the situation was different like we are playing in the qualifier."
Tamim wasn't part of the ODI series against India, which the hosts won by a 2-1 margin. Mehidy Hasan Miraz was the player of the series for his magnificent performances and Tamim would expect him and the rest of the squad members to perform in a similar manner in the upcoming series against England.
