It's not a rare sight in Indian Premier League matches to see umpires giving out faulty decisions marred by misjudgements. Such decisions often lead to unprecedented changes in the course of a game, leading to umpires facing backlashes, more often than not. A similar incident occurred in the 17th encounter of the tournament between Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals.
In the 12th over of the second innings, Ravichandran Ashwin attempted to trick Shivam Dube who had only been at the crease for eight deliveries after the fall of Ajinkya Rahane. Instead of his regular off-spin, he tricked Dube with a wrong-un which struck Dube's pads after he failed to get the willow on it. What followed was an appeal from the RR camp which was signalled out by the on-field umpire. However, it was later revealed that the ball was actually sliding down the leg side and missing the leg stump by a margin.
What is even more interesting is the fact that Dube didn't feel like contesting the decision either, although CSK weren't short of reviews. Bringing the third umpire into the play could have saved CSK a valuable wicket and also a sudden de-escalation of the CSK batting unit as after Dube's dismissal, the MS Dhoni-led side lost three more wickets in quick succession. From 92/2 before Dube's dismissal, CSK were drawn to 113/6 within the span of just 20 deliveries.
Buttler's golden run in IPL 2023 continues
In the first innings, it was Jos Buttler again who played the leading role in Rajasthan Royals' batting as the Englishman registered yet another fifty to stabilise things for the visitors. He took 36 balls to put up a score of 52, aided by one four and three maximums. After losing Yashasvi Jaiswal early on in the innings, Buttler put up a 77-run stand with Devdutt Padikkal for the second wicket. Padikkal contributed 38 runs, amassed over 26 deliveries with the help of five fours.
Buttler further had a crucial 47-run stand with Ravichandran Ashwin after Sanju Samson fell to Ravindra Jadeja for a two-ball duck. Ashwin played an impressive 30-run knock in 22 deliveries, courtesy of one four and two maximums.
However, it was Shimron Hetmyer again who took care of the finishing role for Rajasthan, as the swashbuckling West Indian took just 18 deliveries to give effect to an unconquered innings of 30 runs, which comprised two fours and two sixes. The combined efforts of RR batters saw the visitors post a total of 175/8 in the first innings. For Chennai, Akash Singh, Tushar Deshpande and Ravindra Jadeja took two wickets each.
