David Warner's captaincy ban likely to be lifted soon; CA proposes for change of conduct
David Warner was handed a captaincy ban in 2018 after the infamous ball-tampering scandal.
David Warner’s involvement in the ball tampering scandal in 2018 led to his lifetime captaincy ban. The 35-year-old is now considering to put his hand up for the leadership position and get his ban lifted. While Cricket Australia is also in parallel views with Warner’s interest to overturn the ban but the current code of conduct of CA does not allow a review after a sanction has been approved.
It has brought them to the only option that is available at the moment which is the board requesting its Head of Integrity Jacqui Partridge to propose a change to its rules. The change in rule has been specified to grant players or officials the right to request a penalty be reviewed after an "appropriate period of time." It will enable Warner to request for a review regarding his ban and get it uplifted.
"The onus would be on the applicant to prove they had undergone genuine reform relevant to the offence they were sanctioned for," Cricket Australia said in a statement as quoted by ESPNcricinfo.
"Any review would not revisit the original sanction, other than suspension of a penalty in recognition of genuine reform. The board has requested that the CA Head of Integrity propose an amendment to the code for consideration.
It was agreed that should an amendment in respect to long-term sanctions be adopted, any review of a penalty would be heard by an independent code of conduct commission," the statement added.
David Warner's leadership ability in IPL
Aaron Finch has retired from ODIs and he is likely to part ways from the T20I format too after the T20 World Cup 2022. It will lead to a vacancy in the leadership position and Warner has already proved his supremacy by winning the 2016 title in IPL as a captain. He could be the perfect foil for the leader's role in next year’s ICC Cricket World Cup in India given that he gets his ban lifted in time.
