In a surprising move, South Africa have bolstered their depleted squad for the upcoming two-match Test series in New Zealand by adding the uncapped left-handed opening batter, Edward Moore. The 30-year-old cricketer became the eighth uncapped player in the squad, as many regulars have opted to stay home due to the series coinciding with South Africa's lucrative domestic SA20 competition.

Despite facing criticism for fielding a weakened squad, Cricket South Africa defended the decision, emphasising the financial significance of the SA20 to their stability. Attempts to reschedule the Test series were unsuccessful, which led to the compromised team selection.

Edward Moore, in splendid domestic form this season with 414 runs at an impressive average of 51.75, including two centuries, provides a left-handed option at the top of the order. This move comes after Tony de Zorzi was a late addition to the SA20.

South Africa ruffling some feathers within cricket community

The tour will feature only two players, David Bedingham and Keegan Petersen, from the squad that recently drew a home Test series against India. Coach Shukri Conrad will lead the team, which departs on Friday and is set to play a warm-up fixture against a New Zealand XI before the first Test commences on February 4.

Despite the absence of star players, Cricket South Africa remained committed to the SA20, a crucial element of their financial strategy. The series in New Zealand is part of the ongoing ICC World Test Championship 2023-24, with South Africa having finished fifth and third in the first two editions, earning prize money that some argue is eclipsed by the earnings from the SA20.

South Africa squad for New Zealand Test series:

Neil Brand (c), David Bedingham, Ruan de Swardt, Clyde Fortuin, Zubayr Hamza, Tshepo Moreki, Edward Moore, Mihlali Mpongwana, Duanne Olivier, Dane Paterson, Keegan Petersen, Dane Piedt, Raynard van Tonder, Shaun von Berg, Khaya Zondo.
