Windsor Park Sports Stadium in Dominica will not be hosting any matches of the upcoming T20 World Cup, slated to begin on June 3, 2024. The International Cricket Council (ICC) and Cricket West Indies (CWI) have been notified about the recent development as the stadium was scheduled to host three matches, which include one group stage match and two Super Eight fixtures.

Dominica was one of the seven countries in the West Indies which showed interest in hosting the mega tournament. However, just seven months prior to the tournament, the Dominica government clarified that the contractors revealed that it wouldn’t be possible for them to finish the work in such a stipulated timeframe and that the stadium would not be ready in such a quick span.

“The implementation timelines submitted by the various contractors revealed that it would not be possible to complete these works within the stipulated timeframe before the commencement of the tournament. As a result, a decision was taken not to host any of the matches in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024 as it would not be prudent for the Government of Dominica to commit to hosting these games,” the Dominica government statement read.

“In light of Dominica's sterling reputation in hosting international cricket, this decision is considered to be in the best interest of all,” it added.

We look forward to work with Government of Dominica and Dominica Cricket Association in future: Johnny Grave

In the meantime, Johnny Grave, CWI’s chief executive has mentioned that the board understands Dominica’s problems in hosting the tournament and expects them to keep working in future. He also added that the board is working closely with ICC and USA Cricket to fine-tune the final details as the schedule is expected to be announced very soon.

“We acknowledge the dedication of the Government of Dominica in preparing to host matches as a part of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup 2024. While recognising their commitment, we note the reasons stated for the decision that has been made and understand the position. We look forward to continuing to work with the Government of Dominica and the Dominica Cricket Association to host international matches in the future,” Grave said.
