‘Don't they have any other work to do?’- Salman Butt slams UK PM for giving opinion in Jonny Bairstow's dismissal
UK PM Rishi Sunak slammed the Australian player for Jonny Bairstow's controversial dismissal
Jonny Bairstow's dismissal in the second Test of the Ashes 2023 has been received by cricket fans all over the world in different textures. English fans are anyway referring to the ‘spirit of the game’ term after the wicketkeeper-batter was dismissed in an unusual manner. In the same context, United Kingdom (UK) Prime Minister (PM), Rishi Sunak's spokesperson also gave Sunaks' views on this dismissal. Sunak echoed Stokes' opinion that would not want to win a game like this.
In the same light, former Pakistani skipper, Salman Butt slammed UK’s PM for his support to the home side. Butt was not happy with UK’s PM opinion and asked Sunak to appreciate the winning team rather than starting the debate on the ‘spirit of the game’ issue. The whole incident started unfolding when Aussies wicketkeeper Alex Carey dismissed Bairstow on Day 5 of the Lord's Test, as Bairstow was out of the crease thinking it was a ‘dead ball’. Carey hit the stumps with an underarm throw, and Pat Cummins-led side appealed and the umpire gave out.
"The Prime Ministers have also jumped into the debate over the spirit of the game following the second Test. The question we all should ask him is, 'Don't they have any other work to do?'. You watch the entire Test match first, and then if your team loses, simply applaud the superior team," said Butt on his YouTube channel.
UK’s PM opinion was revealed after the game was over, as Australia won the game by 43 runs on Day 5 when Ben Stokes-led side was bowled out while chasing 371 run target. Rishi Sunak's spokesperson, after the game, stated that PM agreed with Stokes; opinion, that they don’t want to win the game this way.
Butt further disagreed with Geoffrey Boycott’s opinion on Bairstow’s dismissal
"Geoffrey Boycott, a very senior player, has demanded a public apology from Australia. Why should Australia apologize? You should instead make your own players aware of his mistake. Why did he leave his crease after ducking a ball?" the former left-handed batter further added.
Coming to the series, Australia has won back-to-back Tests in Ashes 2023, and with the last match victory at Lord’s, there are surely confident to win the prestigious trophy after the 2001 victory in England, while England after all this controversy will be looking to make a comeback in the third Test at Headingley, starting on Thursday, July 6.
