'Everyone celebrated Kohli's century, none spoke about Bhuvneshwar's fifer' - Gautam Gambhir urges fans to stop 'hero worship'
"He bowled four overs and got five wickets and I don’t think anyone knows about that,” Gambhir said.
Former Indian cricketer Gautam Gambhir has a different view on the most celebrated cricketers in the country and he slammed the media and the fans for worshipping the big names. Virat Kohli, one of the most followed cricketers, recently answered his critics with a fantastic century against Afghanistan in the Asia Cup 2022 and ended his century drought. The 33-year-old yet again became the talking point for the whole country and there were a lot of celebrations over Kohli regaining form.
In the same game, Bhuvneshwar Kumar went unnoticed despite picking up a five-wicket haul in a T20I game as he finished with extraordinary figures of 5 for 4 in his four overs. This certainly did not impress Gambhir who has always been vocal about his views and opined on the matter.
The only thing that we need to worship is Indian cricket: Gautam Gambhir
Gambhir pointed that Bhuvneshwar’s brilliant spell went under the shadow of Virat Kohli's during in the Afghanistan game. He further urged that the country should stop worshipping heroes and instead focus on the whole team.
“When Kohli got a 100 and there was this young guy from a small town of Meerut [Bhuvneshwar Kumar], who also managed to get five wickets, no one even bothered to speak about him. This was so unfortunate. I was the only one, during that commentary stint, who said that. He bowled four overs and got five wickets and I don’t think anyone knows about that,” Gambhir told via Indian Express.
“But Kohli scores a 100 and there are celebrations everywhere in this country. India needs to come out of this hero worship. Whether it’s Indian cricket, whether it’s politics, whether it’s Delhi cricket. We have to stop worshipping heroes. The only thing that we need to worship is Indian cricket, or for that matter Delhi or India,” he added.
