Gautam Gambhir likely to head coach India A side ahead of England tour
The 43-year-old India head coach is willing to break the trend since none of his predecessors took this step in the past.
The Indian team has just won their second consecutive title, winning the Champions Trophy 2025 after defeating New Zealand in the final. Apart from legendary batter Rohit Sharma leading the side, this was a huge moment for current India head coach and former two-time World Champions Gautam Gambhir.
The 43-year-old was criticised ahead of the series for the decisions he made and after the poor performances in the last two Test series against New Zealand and Australia, respectively. But his comeback shut the mouths of all the critics since he led the team to a win in his maiden ICC trophy as head coach.
After this triumph, it also seems like Gambhir could be breaking the custom as an Indian head coach, where he will be travelling with the India A team to look at prospects in international cricket. This could be a big step taken by Gambhir as a coach since none of his predecessors like Rahul Dravid and Ravi Shastri has done this.
“Gambhir has been in discussions with the BCCI since he returned from Australia. He has expressed his desire to travel with the India 'A' team to get a clearer view of the reserve pool, with India winning the Champions Trophy after Gambhir's insistence for certain wild card players, one may expect him to assert more in future,” a BCCI source told The Times of India.
“One of the crucial issues identified is reviving India 'A' tours. There have been only a handful 'A' series after Dravid left NCA, and all of those were shadow tours for a marquee series. Gambhir too believes that there needs to be more 'A' tours. That's why he wants to take stock of the situation firsthand," the source added.

Speaking of the upcoming India schedule, India will be playing a five-match Test series against England, which will commence in June 2025. This will be an important series for the team which has not had a great run in red-ball cricket in the last two series, and Gambhir would now want to redeem himself as India coach in the longest format as well.
