After failing to do well in the last edition of the T20 World Cup, it was reported that the selectors may give more opportunities to young cricketers and keep the likes of Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and even KL Rahul out of the scheme of things as far as the shortest format of the game is concerned. Backing the philosophy, the selectors once again decided to name a relatively young squad for the five-match T20I series against the West Indies, as neither Virat nor Rohit was picked.

The main goal is likely to manage their workload ahead of the ODI World Cup, but the roadmap is not yet clear as the BCCI has not laid a structure for T20 cricket. As per former board president Sourav Ganguly, both Virat and Rohit should be part of the scheme of things as both have done well in the shortest format. The former Indian captain also added that Virat was in great form in the recently concluded Indian Premier League, and thus, he isn’t quite sure why he won’t succeed in T20 internationals.

“Pick your best players; it doesn’t matter who they are. In my opinion, both Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma still have a place in T20I cricket, and I cannot see why a Kohli or a Rohit cannot play T20I cricket. Kohli was in great form in the IPL, and both have a place in T20 cricket, if you ask me,” Ganguly was quoted as saying by RevSportz.

Ganguly shares a message for Rinku Singh, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Jitesh Sharma

After having a terrific season in the Indian Premier League, Rinku Singh, Ruturaj Gaikwad and Jitesh Sharma were expected to travel to the West Indies for the five-match series. However, none could make it to the 15-member squad. Speaking about the same, Sourav Ganguly stated that if they keep up performing, they will soon get an opportunity in the senior team.

“They just have to keep playing. They will have to keep performing in whatever chances they get. It happens all the time. Only 15 can be picked in the squad, and 11 can play. So, somebody has to miss out. I am pretty sure their time will come,” Ganguly said.
