'I have never seen him that angry' - Suresh Raina shares an unseen side of MS Dhoni

Former India and Chennai Super Kings skipper MS Dhoni is known for his calm and composed demeanour, earning him the term of Captain Cool. However, a recent revelation by his former teammate Suresh Raina has shed light on a rare instance when Dhoni lost his cool, a never-before-seen dressing-room avatar of the iconic cricketer.

The incident took place during the 2014 Indian Premier League (IPL) season when CSK suffered a heartbreaking loss against Punjab Kings (formerly known as Kings XI Punjab) in the second Qualifier. Chasing a huge target of 227, CSK fell short by 24 runs, despite heroic efforts from Raina (87 off 25 balls) and Dhoni (42 off 31 balls).

In a recent interview with Lallantop, Raina recollected the events that took place in the CSK dressing room after the match. "I have never seen Dhoni that angry. He vented it out after that match. He was like 'We don't score runs, we don't do this, that'. He threw his pads and helmet in the dressing room," Raina said.

Raina explained Dhoni's frustration, "He was irritated that we lost a match that we should have won. He was angry because we lost a match that we shouldn't have. Otherwise, we would have won the IPL that year as well," Raina added.

I felt like a man possessed: Suresh Raina

Raina himself played a pivotal role in CSK's valiant chase, smashing a quickfire 87 runs off just 25 balls, including six sixes and twelve boundaries. That innings of his is still considered one of the most destructive knocks in the history of IPL. Reflecting on his knock,

"I felt like a man possessed. The previous day, I had a dream that I would do something special. I was seeing the ball like a football. But, I was run out. The ball hitting the bat gave me a very different sound. I was feeling like no one could stop me," the 37-year-old further added.

Raina also addressed his self-removal from IPL 2020, clarifying that he left the bio-bubble to be with his family after the tragic demise of his three relatives, dismissing rumours suggesting he left due to dissatisfaction with his hotel room arrangements. He emphasised his desire to support his loved ones during their distressing time.

"There was bereavement in the family. In my uncle's family, there were deaths. A group of gangsters killed the entire family. It happened in Pathankot. So I went there. But there was a bio-bubble in the IPL, where you couldn't return. My father was very upset. When the Kachche gang did what they did, my entire family was in stress. I thought cricket came next, I could play anytime, first, my family was important," he concluded.
